HAMDEN, Conn. – Following a thrilling come-from-behind victory against Penn State, the Quinnipiac women's rugby team hits the road on Saturday afternoon to square off with the Army West Point Black Knights in West Point, N.Y.
Last Time Out
Two second half tries by sophomore Clara Lemal-Brown (Wooster, Ohio) erased an eight-point deficit and gave Quinnipiac a 23-22 victory over Penn State last Saturday. Freshman Bianca Ceolin kicked three successful penalty kicks in the first half and added a conversion in the 63rd minute that proved to be the difference in the game.
Scouting Army West Point
This will be the fifth season of varsity play for the Army West Point women's rugby program. The Black Knights finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 4-5 record during the 15s season, falling to Dartmouth in the semifinals of the NIRA Championships. Army West Point opened up its 2019 season with a bang last Saturday, as the Black Knights defeated Harvard, 35-10. The 35 points are the most Army has scored in varsity play in its opening game of the season.
All-Time Against Army West Point
Quinnipiac is 9-1 all-time against the Black Knights, including the winning the last six matchups dating back to 2015. The teams did not face off last season, but the Bobcats were victorious in their last meeting (October 13, 2017) by a 62-5 margin.
Can You Kick It?
Yes she can! Ceolin's three first half penalty kicks set the tone for the Bobcats in last week's win over Penn State. The freshman followed them up with a 63rd minute conversion that gave Quinnipiac a one-point lead and eventual victory. The three penalty kicks are the most in a single game by any Bobcat in program history. The program record for penalty kicks in a season is four.
New Cats On The Block
Eight players have made their Quinnipiac debuts so far this season as Maya le Rossignol, Hazel Bice, Libby Moser, Addison Walker, Erin Terwilliger, Bianca Ceolin, Grace Gitchell, and Gracie Cartwright all played key minutes in two-game homestand against Harvard and Penn State. In the victory over Penn State, the Bobcats starting lineup consisted of no seniors, five juniors, and 10 underclassmen.
Erin Try-Williger
Freshman Erin Terwilliger jumpstarted her collegiate career with a try in the Bobcats' home opener last weekend. Terwilliger vaulted herself over a pile of teammates and opponents for a try in the 71st minute of play against Harvard.
'Koen" You Dig It?
Sophomore Allison Koenig (Waukesha, Wisconsin) started 2019 right where she left off at the end of last year as she scored Quinnipiac's first try of the season against Harvard. She broke free from beyond midfield and stiff-armed a Harvard defender before finishing off the first try of the contest less than two minutes into the game. Koenig picked up three tries in the Bobcats' NIRA postseason last year, including her first career multi-try performance in the quarterfinals. On the season, Koenig was top-four on the team with seven tries while her 35 points were in the top five.
Mikah's Money
Senior Mikah Maples (Moweaqua, Illinois) was dominant last season as she reached 10 tries for a second straight years. Maples led the team with 10 tries, in addition to having a team-high three multi-try games. In her career, Maples now has 25 tries.
Roskopf Returns
Four-time NIRA All-American Emily Roskopf (Dublin, California) returns to the Quinnipiac Rugby Field this season as the official color commentator for the program's three home games. Roskopf will join a play-by-play commentator from the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network for all three events.
Spreading the Love
Quinnipiac was extremely unselfish with the ball last season, taking a team approach to scoring as 10 different players found the try zone on the year. In addition to 10 total scorers, five different players recorded at least six tries. Five freshmen also recorded tries for the Bobcats.
