Bobcats Host Army, Harvard, Penn State in 7-Game Slate
HAMDEN, Conn. — Head coach Becky Carlson and the Quinnipiac women's rugby program have announced a seven-match regular season schedule for the 2019 campaign, including home contests against Harvard, Penn State and Army West Point.
For the second consecutive season, the Bobcats will open up the year with two straight Saturday afternoon home matches. Harvard visits on Aug. 31 in a rematch of last year's NIRA Semifinal contest. The teams met three times last season, including in the Bobcats' home opener.
Perennial power Penn State visits Hamden on Sept. 7 in the fifth all-time matchup between the two programs.
Following the brief season-opening homestand, Carlson's squad hits the road for the next six weeks of competition beginning with a trip to Army on Sept. 14.
The trip to West Point comes one week prior to a neutral-site match against Notre Dame College (Ohio) at Pittsburgh's Founders Field on Saturday, Sept. 21. Quinnipiac met the Falcons last season at Founders Field and earning a 33-10 win, thanks to scores from five different Bobcats players. The Bobcats and Falcons also squared off in the the NIRA Quarterfinals, where Quinnipiac posted a dominant 46-5 victory.
After a bye week, the Bobcats face off with consecutive Ivy League competitors, Harvard and Dartmouth, on Oct. 5 and 12, respectively.
The regular season then closes out for the Bobcats on Saturday, Oct. 27 for a Senior Day matchup with Army West Point at 1 p.m. The Golden Knights were the runner-up the first time Quinnipiac earned the national title in 2015, when the Bobcats prevailed in a close one 24-19 at Brown. A year later, Quinnipiac won a postseason rematch at West Point in the NIRA Semifinals before defeating Central Washington for its second straight title. Last season, the Bobcats won both ends of a home-and-home with the Golden Knights, winning a tight one on opening day at home 42-22 and then dominating the rematch on the road 62-5.
"We are excited to unveil our 2019-20 NIRA schedule with the top NCAA programs in the country," said Carlson. "Building upon our foundation that we reshaped last season, our squad will have quite a different look this year, but always with the same positive, energized culture to add to the Bobcat legacy."
The Bobcats return a majority of last season's roster, losing just two players, Emily Roskopf and Caitria Sands to graduation. NIRA All-American Mikah Maples returns for her senior season, along with a strong group of upperclassmen, including Remy Spires and Destiny Henry. That group is joined by a supporting cast of underclassmen, including Clara Lemal-Brown, Allison Koenig, and McKenna Haz, all of whom made major contributions in their debut seasons a year ago.
