Cameron Young Reflects on Pre-NBA Draft Process
6/21/2019 9:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
HAMDEN, Conn. – For former Quinnipiac men's basketball guard Cameron Young, the past two months have been a whirlwind.
Young – who finished his career with the Bobcats in March after being selected as the unanimous choice for the 2018-19 MAAC Player of the Year – has worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trailblazers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics over the last two months.
And as he embarks on his journey in professional basketball, Quinnipiac's Division I single-season scoring leader hasn't forgotten to reflect on the opportunities he's been afforded.
"I really enjoyed my pre-draft process, and I'm thankful for the teams that took time to evaluate me at the Reese's® College All-Star Game, the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, and in my individual workouts with pro teams," Young said. "I'm competing against guys who played in the ACC, SEC, and the PAC 12 – it's an incredible opportunity for me."
Young scored 1,350 total points in 70 career games for the Bobcats – setting a new career program record by averaging 19.3 points per game. The MAAC Player of the Year posted a Quinnipiac Division I single-season program record 728 points in 2018-19, also good for the third-most points in a season across all levels. He recorded 23.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest in 2018-19.
Quinnipiac's first AP All-American (Honorable Mention) discussed how his time in Hamden helped ready him for his newest journey.
"My time at Quinnipiac prepared me for this process in many ways," Young explained. "Quinnipiac helped me develop as a player, and many of the values the program builds itself on will help me at the next level. Going in to many of these workouts over the past few weeks, I've been familiar with a lot of the things they ask you to do."
Young scored the highest single-game point total in Division I basketball this past season, recording an impressive 55 points on Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Times Union Center vs. Siena. Young's 55 points also set a Quinnipiac Division I program record, as the graduate guard shot 15-for-24 from the floor, grabbing 10 rebounds in 53+ minutes played.
He scored 25 points a week later in Quinnipiac's road win over Monmouth on Feb. 24, breaking his own Division I single-season scoring record (622) – which was set in 2017-18. Young ended his final collegiate campaign with 728 points, scoring 23.5 points per contest. He also broke the program's Division I single-season record for 3-pointers, surpassing James Johnson's total of 84 shots from distance in 2010-11. Young made 104 3-point field goals in 2018-19.
"I'm excited for what's to come after the draft. I know that I've created a good opportunity for myself professionally whether it's in the U.S. or overseas."
