Whelan Scores 31st Career Goal in Match

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer dropped a tight MAAC battle vs. Iona, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the QU Soccer Stadium. Eamon Whelan scored the lone goal of the afternoon for the Bobcats in the 73^rd minute.

With the result, the Bobcats to 4-2-1 in league play, while Iona takes sole possession of second place in the league standings at 5-1-1.

SCORING SUMMARY

Second Half

(48' – Iona 1, Quinnipiac 0): Najim Romero broke the tie less than three minutes into the second half, scoring his third goal of the season on a feed from Mauro Bravo to give the Gaels the lead.
(48' – Iona 2, Quinnipiac 0): Mauro Bravo scored his team-high eighth goal of the year less than a minute later, assist credited to Eimantas Lotuzys to make it 2-0 Iona.
(73' – Iona 2, Quinnipiac 1): Eamon Whelan got the Bobcats back within a goal in the 73^rd minute, capitalizing on a perfect cross from Jason Budhai. Whelan one-timed Budhai's pass out in front of the net, scoring his 31^st career goal.

NOTES

Whelan's score gives him 31 career goals, which ranks tied for No. 3 in program history.
Shots were 15-11 in favor of Iona, as the Gaels attempted eight shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jared Mazzola made four stops, giving him 58 total saves on the year. He now owns a 1.35 goals-against mark in 2019.
Quinnipiac is 3-4-4 vs. Iona dating back to 2007. The Gaels have taken each of the last three meetings by a single score.
