Men's Soccer Stretches Unbeaten Streak to Four Games

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Freshman Henry Weigand scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 81^st minute of play, leading Quinnipiac men's soccer to a road victory, 3-2, over Monmouth on Wednesday night at Hesse Field.

Fellow freshman Tomas Svecula and sophomore Oriac Vila Rotxes each added a goal in the first half of action. With the win, the Bobcats move to 4-1-1 in league play so far in 2019.

SCORING SUMMARY

First Half

(25' – Quinnipiac 1, Monmouth 0): Tomas Svecula made it 1-0 Bobcats midway through the first half. Quinnipiac attempted a corner chance that made it to Dejan Duric, who headed the ball toward the net from inside the box. The initial shot was stopped by the Monmouth goalkeeper, Sean Murray, but Svecula was there to one-time the deflection into the goal.
(34' – Quinnipiac 2, Monmouth 0): Oriac Vila Rotxes gave Quinnipiac a two-goal lead less than 10 minutes later. Evan Hughes played it ahead to Vila, who took a few touches in space, then beat the Monmouth's keeper to the lower right side of the net for his fourth score of the year. Hughes and Romain Daniellou each earned an assist on the play.
(34' – Quinnipiac 2, Monmouth 1): Liam McGregor cut the deficit in half for Monmouth, scoring on an assist Anes Mrkulic at 36:31.

First Half

(73' – Quinnipiac 2, Monmouth 2): Ben Zakowski scored an unassisted goal for
(82' – Quinnipiac 3, Monmouth 2): Henry Weigand scored in the 82^nd minute to give the Bobcats the lead once again. Svecula got the first scoring chance off another Quinnipiac corner, then Weigand collected the deflection and finished for the game-winner.

NOTES

Svecula's goal is his fifth of the season, which ranks tops on the Bobcats. The freshman now has five goals and two assists for 12 total points, and has scored all five of his goals in the last eight QU contests.
Vila's score is his fourth of the season, and his sixth career goal.
Weigand's game-winner is the first goal and points of his collegiate career. The freshman has started in all 13 games for QU this year.
Jared Mazzola made a season-high eight saves in the win. He now owns a .750 save percentage, and a 1.30 goals-against average this season.
Shots were 15-10 in favor of Monmouth, and both teams attempted four corners.
Quinnipiac has now stretched its unbeaten streak to four games, scoring 13 goals in that span.
The Bobcats are now 6-13-4 all-time against Monmouth. Quinnipiac has won three of the last four meetings. The last time QU won on the road at Monmouth was Oct. 19, 2001.
