2OT Goal Helps Bobcats Earn Win in MAAC Opener
HAMDEN Conn. – Freshman Tomas Svecula scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute of play, leading Quinnipiac men's soccer past Saint Peter's, 2-1, in double overtime during Wednesday's contest at the QU Soccer Stadium in Hamden.
With the win in the MAAC opener, the Bobcats move to 3-3-2 so far in 2019. Eamon Whelan scored in the 86th minute to give the Bobcats a lead late in regulation, then Svecula netted the first game-winner of his Quinnipiac career.

- (86' – Quinnipiac 1, Saint Peter's 0): The Bobcats took the lead with less than five minutes to go. Senior Eamon Whelan earned possession inside the box, created space, then blasted one into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
- (90' – Quinnipiac 1, Saint Peter's 1): SPU tied the game 1-1, as Alex Garcia found the back of the net on a set piece. The goal was assisted by Jordan Jowers, who played the ball in to the box.
- (103' – Quinnipiac 2, Saint Peter's 1): Tomas Svecula netted the game-winner in the second overtime. Brage Aasen played the ball into the box, avoided a defender, then crossed it over to the freshman – who one-timed a shot into the back of the net to send Quinnipiac home with the win.

NOTES
- Whelan's goal is the 29th of his career. He is one of just 36 active NCAA Division I players with 25+ career goals. The senior scored in non-conference play vs. UMass Lowell and Sacred Heart.
- Svecula's goal is his third of the season. The freshman now leads the program with eight points.
- The Bobcats possessed the ball for 58 percent of the game.
- Total shots were 22-12 in favor of the Bobcats, and there were 32 total fouls in the contest.
- Jared Mazzola made three more saves, earning his third victory of the season.
- The Bobcats are 5-5-1 all-time vs. SPU. Quinnipiac has won the last four matchups between the two programs, and five of the last six meetings.
- The Bobcats continue MAAC action on Saturday, Oct. 5, traveling to Manhattan for a 2:00 p.m. start.
