HAMDEN, Conn. - Former Quinnipiac women's basketball standout Carly Fabbri '18 is a 2017-18 nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award, the organization announced this afternoon.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Award is in its 28th year and honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers. A record 581 student-athletes were nominated for the award this year, including 251 from the Division I level.
Fabbri had a significant impact on the court during her four seasons with the Quinnipiac women's basketball program, helping the Bobcats to four regular season league titles and three tournament crowns in that span. She served as a three-year captain and starting point guard, quarterbacking the team to its first three NCAA Tournament wins over the last two seasons, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2017 with wins over Marquette and Miami (Fla.).
This past season, Fabbri ranked 11th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio (2.90) while leading Quinnipiac to an undefeated MAAC season (18-0), a conference tournament title, and another NCAA Tournament win over Miami (Fla.). She was a third-team All-MAAC selection, and was chosen to the MAAC All-Tournament team.
In the classroom, Fabbri graduated this spring with a 3.90 GPA as a physician assistant major, including a perfect 4.0 during her senior year. Quinnipiac's demanding physician assistant program ranks No. 5 nationally in its field by US News and World Report. She has performed numerous hours of community service work in local hospitals, while also coaching youth basketball, and participating in the women's basketball program's community outreach.
Each conference will now choose two selections for the NCAA Woman of the Year award from its pool of school nominations. The Woman of the Year committee will then choose the top 30 from that list (10 from each division) before announcing nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then chooses the winner from those nine, which will be announced at the annual awards ceremony on Oct. 28.
