LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Junior Carly Timpson repeated as the MAAC high jump champion, clearing the bar at a school outdoor record 1.73 meters, to highlight the performance of the Quinnipiac outdoor track and field team on the second and final day of the MAAC Championships on Sunday afternoon at Rider University.
With a win in the 200-meter dash, senior Jessica Lee earned her fourth MAAC title of her senior year, and added a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Junior Marlo Wehrer came in second and senior Christina Barbaro was third in the 400-meter hurdles for the Bobcats, who finished fifth overall in the team competition. Senior Mackenzie Merkel, meanwhile, came in fifth in the discus with a school-record throw of 43.62 meters, adding over 2.5 meters to her personal best.
Timpson surpassed her own Quinnipiac outdoor high jump record of 1.70 meters, while finishing just behind her overall record of 1.74, which she set during indoor season. She cleared 1.70 meters on her second try to secure the individual championship, and then cleared 1.73 on her third and final attempt to add more height to her winning total.
Lee, who won three MAAC titles at the indoor championships in February, added her second 200-meter title of the year with a final time of 24.37, winning by a margin of .24 over Paige Chapman of Manhattan. Lee wasn't able to repeat as the 100-meter hurdles champion, though, as Sara Gardner of Rider finished in 13.41 to edge out Lee's 13.61 time.
Wehrer was a close second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.61, behind Debbie Boerke of Marist, who won the race in 1:01.25. Barbaro finished a comfortable third in 1:02.91, more than a full second ahead of fourth place, while sophomore Jillian DiGiacinto added two points for Quinnipiac with a seventh-place finish in 1:05.82.
The throwing events saw senior Mackenzie Merkel come into the MAAC Championships with a personal best in the discus of 40.99 meters, a mark she surpassed on each of her last five throws. Her second throw went a personal-best 42.27 meters, which she then surpassed with a 42.57 on her fourth throw,. Her sixth and final throw sailed another meter further still, putting her name in the Quinnipiac record books at 43.62, breaking the school record of 43.09 set last year by Mikah Maples.
Quinnipiac also added a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay as Barbaro, Wehrer, Melissa Solomon and Meghan Curtin finished in 3:56.42 to earn eight points for the Bobcats.
The outdoor track and field season won't end with the MAAC Championships, as several competitors have earned qualifying marks for next weekend's ECAC Championships. The NCAA Regionals, for those Bobcats who qualify, will then be held on May 24-26 in Tampa, Florida.
