HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's tennis team stretched its all-time winning streak against MAAC opponents to 44 and remained alone in first place in the league standings this year at 6-0 with a 7-0 shutout win over Marist on Sunday evening at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
With the win, the Bobcats are 12-6 overall on the season, while they knock Marist (7-8, 4-1 MAAC) out of the ranks of conference unbeatens. Quinnipiac has never lost a MAAC match, going 36-0 all-time in the regular season and 8-0 in the MAAC Tournament.
Quinnipiac quickly earned the doubles point by taking 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior Alexandra Mircea and sophomore Layla Rodriguez were the first to finish at No. 3, while freshman Dominique Vasile and junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan followed shortly after with a 6-1 win to clinch the doubles point. The third match took an extra half-hour to finish, but freshman Payton Bradley and junior Jennifer Lu were able to take a 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles, winning the tiebreaker 7-4.
The Bobcats carried the momentum over into singles and left little doubt as to the final outcome, clinching the team victory with three quick singles wins. Freshman Courtney Nash had a dominant win at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1) to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead, and Lu followed quickly with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles to make the score 3-0. Lohaphaisan then gave Quinnipiac the fourth and clinching point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Vasile had a tough battle in the first set at No. 1 singles before coming away with a 6-4 win, and then rattled off six games in a row in the second set to finish off a 6-4, 6-1 win. Rodriguez was pushed in the second set at No. 4 singles but was able to prevail with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
The lone singles court to go into a third set was Bradley at No. 3, who won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second to Claire Schmitz 6-3. The 10-point tiebreaker was close the whole way, but Bradley was able to take a point on Schmitz' serve to make the score 9-8 and then served it out with an ace to finish off the three-set win and give the Bobcats the shutout.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Fairfield for its MAAC finale, where a win would clinch the top seed in the MAAC Tournament on April 27-28. The Bobcats will also host Division III power Middlebury on Friday in its final home match of the year.
