HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's rugby team begins its quest for a fourth straight national championship Saturday afternoon as the No. 3 seed and taking on the No. 6 seed Notre Dame College Falcons in the NIRA Quarterfinals.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac took a trip out to State College, Pennsylvania, last weekend to face Penn State in a non-league match against the Nittany Lions, falling 26-22 in the contest. Despite the loss, the Bobcats battled with a strong second half as they outscored Penn State, 22-14. Four different Bobcats tallied tries as Mikah Maples, Margot Vella, Mckenna Haz and Allison Koenig all found the try zone.
Scouting Notre Dame College
The Falcons sport a 4-4 record on the season and have a 3-4 record against Tier I NIRA teams. Notre Dame College has won back-to-back games heading into the NIRA Quarterfinals with wins against AIC and Norwich. The Falcons scored 98 points in their final two games, outscoring both opponents 98-32.
All-Time Against Notre Dame College
The Bobcats are unbeaten in three all-time meetings between the two teams dating back to the 2015-16 season, including a 33-10 victory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earlier this season. The Bobcats and Falcons have twice met in Pittsburgh following the first-ever meeting between the two teams in South Euchlid, Ohio, back in 2015-16. Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between the two teams in Hamden.
NIRA Quarterfinals
Saturday kicks off the NIRA Tier I postseason with four matches set to be played. In addition to the Bobcats and Falcons facing off, No. 1 seed Dartmouth hosts No. 8 Brown, No. 2 Harvard hosts No. 7 AIC and No. 4 Army West Point takes on No. 5 Norwich.
Senior Day
Quinnipiac women's rugby is set to honor the Class of 2019 on Saturday with senior day, one of the most decorated senior classes in Quinnipiac Athletics history. This class consists of two members: Caitria Sands (Essex, Vermont) and Emily Roskopf (Dublin, California). As a class, they have been a part of three straight national championships for the Bobcats beginning as freshmen in 2015 when they beat Army for the first national championship in Quinnipiac Athletics history. Over the past four seasons, the Bobcats have gone 35-9 in their 44 matches.
Caitria Sands
A wing for the Bobcats, Caitria Sands has enjoyed an incredible career for the Bobcats throughout her four years in Hamden. Sands has played in nearly every match in her career and has over 10 tries in her career. Last season, Sands recorded 50 tackles on the season and had a career-high seven tries as a sophomore in 2016.
Emily Roskopf
One of the most decorated players in program history, Emily Roskopf is a three-time NIRA All-American in addition to leading Quinnipiac to three straight national championships. Roskopf has also played in nearly every match in her career, seeing time in 42 matches throughout four years. Roskopf has totaled 56 tries in four years, including a career-high 23 as a sophomore in 2016 to go with 21 runs over 20 yards. This season, Roskopf is second on the team with seven tries.
Game of Emphasis
The Bobcats regular season finale will also serve as Quinnipiac women's rugby's game of emphasis, an initiative developed by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Quinnipiac student-athletes will flock to the Quinnipiac Rugby Field to cheer on the Bobcats as they close out the regular season and prepare for the postseason run.
Mikah's Makin' Moves
Mikah Maples recorded her eighth try of the season last Saturday at Penn State as she put the Bobcats on the board early in the second half. With her try, she broke a tie with Roskopf for the most tries on the team this season while recording a try in a second straight game after picking up two against Brown the week before.
Ring the Vella
Leppington, Australia, native Margot Vella picked up her fourth try of her freshman season for the Bobcats as she entered the try zone near the midway point of the second half. Vella now has a try in three of the last four games for the Bobcats.
Haz to be Good
Mckenna Haz continued her impressive freshman season for the Bobcats as she recorded a try for a second straight week at Penn State. In addition to her try, Haz kicked her 25th conversion on the season to give her a team-high 58 points.
Koenig's Kruising
The Bobcats picked up a third try by a freshman in Saturday's match at Penn State as Allison Koenig also found the try zone. Koenig has recorded a try in fourth straight match for the Bobcats, good for all four of her tries.
Making an Impact
The Quinnipiac freshmen have seen an increased role throughout the season, including finding the try zone frequently. At least three freshman have recorded tries in each of the past two matches for the Bobcats while freshmen have recorded 18 tries on the season.
