Bobcats Reach NIRA Semifinals for Fourth Straight Season Following Win vs. NDC

HAMDEN, Conn. – After a dominant quarterfinal victory last Saturday, the No. 3 seed Quinnipiac women's rugby team cruised into their fourth straight NIRA Semifinals appearance where the Bobcats will take on the No. 2 seed Harvard Crimson on Friday at 3 p.m. in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Weekend Updates
Due to inclement schedule for Thursday night into Friday morning, the site of the NIRA Championship weekend has been moved to Scully-Fahey Field. In addition to the site change, kickoff for the Quinnipiac vs. Harvard Semifinal game has been pushed back one hour to 3 p.m. to allow for extra field care between semifinal matches. Last Time Out
The Bobcats opened the 2018 postseason with a resounding 46-5 victory over the No. 6 seed Notre Dame College Falcons in Hamden last Saturday. The Bobcats scored the first 39 points of the match before the Falcons added a score. Four Bobcats tallied two tries each while Mckenna Haz had three conversions on the afternoon. The win was Quinnipiac's second straight over a NIRA opponent.
Scouting Harvard
Harvard enters the weekend with a 7-1 record on the season with a 5-1 mark in NIRA play. The Crimson have won five straight matches heading into the NIRA Semifinals, with the lone loss coming at Dartmouth on Sept. 22. Harvard rebounded well in its last meeting with Dartmouth, taking down the Big Green 12-3 to win the Ivy League Championship.
All-Time Against Harvard
Quinnipiac is 1-2 all-time against Harvard, with both losses to the Crimson coming this season. The Crimson opened the season with a 32-19 win at Quinnipiac before beating the Bobcats in Cambridge, 24-21. The Bobcats and Crimson had met just one other time in 15s play, with the first meeting between the two teams coming on Sept. 17, 2013 with the Bobcats winning 39-10.
NIRA Championship Weekend
The other semifinal matchup schedule for the weekend features the No. 1 seed Dartmouth Big Green taking on No. 4 Army West Point at 12 p.m., prior to kickoff of the Bobcats and the Crimson. The winner of each match will meet in the NIRA Championship match set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Push for Four
Quinnipiac is on a quest for its fourth consecutive NIRA National Championship, having won three straight from 2015-2017. Last season, the Bobcats defeated the Big Green, 29-20, in the championship match. Quinnipiac also beat Central Washington for the title in 2016 and Army West Point for the its first national championship in 2015.
Emily's Electric
Senior Emily Roskopf (Dublin, California) scored the opening and closing tries of the quarterfinal match against Notre Dame College, ending her final home game as a member of the Quinnipiac women's rugby team on a strong note. With her two try performance, Roskopf now has two multi-try games this season and nine tries on the season. The three-time NIRA All-American now has 58 tries in her career.
Mikah's Money
Junior Mikah Maples (Moweaqua, Illinois) has been dominant this season as she reached 10 tries for a second straight season. Maples leads the team with 10 tries on the season in addition to having a team-high three multi-try games, including. In her career, Maples now has 25 tries.
Koenig Machine
Freshman Allison Koenig (Waukesha, Wisconsin) picked up a pair of tries in the Bobcats' NIRA Quarterfinal victory over the Falcons on Saturday for her first career multi-try performance. Koenig scored back-to-back tries for the Bobcats in the first half to establish a dominant lead. On the season, Koenig is tied for fourth on the team with six tries while her 30 points are tied for fifth.
Margot Magic
Fellow freshman Margot Vella (Leppington, Australia) also had a breakout performance on Saturday as she recorded back-to-back tries to open scoring in the second half Saturday to really put the game out of reach for Notre Dame College. Vella's two-try game was also her first such game of her career while picking up her seventh of the season. Vella's seven tries are third on the team and she is fourth with 35 points.
I Haz Points
Another freshman making an impact, Mckenna Haz (Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia) put home three conversions against Notre Dame College despite difficult kicking conditions. Hax increased her season total to 28 conversions while her 69 total points on the season is tops for the Bobcats. Haz has a conversion in every match this season.
Spreading the Love
Quinnipiac has been unselfish with the ball this season, taking a team approach to scoring as 10 different players have found the try zone this season. In addition to 10 total scorers, five different players have recorded at least six tries this season. Five freshmen have also recorded tries for the Bobcats.
