
QU Women's Tennis Doubles Teams Highlight Opening Day Of QU Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. - Both of Quinnipiac's A flight doubles teams picked up two wins to advance through to tomorrow's semifinals on the first day of the Quinnipiac Invitational on Friday afternoon. Freshman Payton Bradley (Downington, Pa.) and sophomore Laya Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) teamed up for two doubles win, and each added a singles win as well (Bradley in the A flight, and Rodriguez in the B flight), while junior Jennifer Lu (Cypress, Calif.) and freshman Dominique Vasile (Bingham Farms, Mich.) also advanced to the semifinals in doubles.

- Bradley and Rodriguez won both of their doubles matches convincingly (6-2 and 6-3). Bradley then won her A flight singles match 6-3, 6-3 over Brianna Lauria of Sacred Heart to advance to the quarterfinals, remaining in both A flights heading into tomorrow.
- Rodriguez won her B flight singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Katie Marvin from Providence to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals and improve to 3-0 on the day as well..
- Lu and Vasile moved into the A flight doubles semifinals with a pair of tight wins. Their first win came against Providence when they took the final three games after trailing 4-3, earning match point on a Lu service winner. Their second win was over UConn 7-6 in a tiebreaker (7-5), when Vasile's service winner ended the match on Quinnipiac's fifth match point, including four in the tiebreaker after taking a 6-2 lead.
- Lu fell 6-4, 6-4 in A singles to Melanie Allen of Army (Vasile only played doubles).
- Quinnipiac had two doubles teams open up with wins in the B flight but fall in their second match. Freshman Stephanie Yanosov (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and freshman Courtney Nash (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Amy Zammarieh (Trumbull, Conn.) each won their first matches 6-4.
- Lohaphaisan came from behind in her C flight singles match to force a third set after trailing 4-1 in the second, winning five straight games. She was ahead 3-2 in the pro-set tiebreaker when she earned the win as her opponent was forced to retire.
- Freshman Scarlett Blydenburgh (Chatham, N.J.) won her first match in the C singles flight 6-1, over Nicole Legler of Rhode Island.
- Nash picked up her first career singles win as well in the D flight to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win, recovering to win the tiebreaker after having three match points earlier in the set. Junior Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, N.J.) won her opening match in D singles 6-4, 6-0, before falling in her second match of the day.
- Tomorrow's action begins with the doubles semifinals at QU Outdoor Courts at 9 a.m., followed by singles quarterfinals in all four flights. Consolation singles will be played at North Haven.
