2017 Schedule
HAMDEN, Conn. - Fresh off its most successful season at the Division I level, the Quinnipiac volleyball team will test itself against the toughest schedule it has ever faced during the 2017 campaign.
A year ago, the Bobcats more than doubled their highest win total as a Division I program, finishing 21-13 (a nation's best 18-win improvement over 2015) and reaching the MAAC Championship match for the first time. Quinnipiac entered the postseason as the No. 3 seed in the MAAC, and defeated No. 6 Niagara and No. 2 Marist. before falling to top-seeded Fairfield in the finals.
This year, Quinnipiac is hoping to test itself early to prepare for another run at the conference title, particularly with a road trip to the Cougar Challenge at Washington State on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Bobcats will face Washington State and Baylor at the tournament, which also features College of Charleston and the College of the Incarnate Word. Washington State and Baylor both finished with identical 22-12 records last year and both advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, while finishing right next to each other in the NCAA's final RPI rankings (Washington State 38, Baylor 39).
Prior to its big trip out West, the Bobcats will open the season by traveling to participate in the Fort Wayne Invitational on August 25-26, facing Toledo, SIU Edwardsville and the host Mastadons. The tournament will be a homecoming for senior Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.), as well as fifth-year senior Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.), who will serve as an assistant coach this year. SIU Edwardsville (22-8) is another one of the five 20-win teams on the Quinnipiac schedule after improving by 14 wins over the 2015 season, ranking tied for third nationally behind Quinnipiac (18) and Notre Dame (15).
After a non-conference road match at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 6, the Bobcats will travel to their third tournament of the year at the Towson Invitational on Sept. 8-9. Quinnipiac will meet Eastern Michigan and Lafayette on the first day, and then face host Towson, which is coming off a 24-9 season last year, and Cal State Fullerton on the second day.
Quinnipiac will open MAAC play with a road trip to Manhattan and Iona on Saturday and Sunday Sept. 16-17, before hosting their first home matches of the season on the weekend of Sept. 23-24, facing Saint Peter's on Saturday and Rider on Sunday.
Key home MAAC matches include Siena on Wednesday, Sept. 27, Marist on Wednesday, Oct. 4, and Fairfield in a rematch of last year's MAAC title match on Friday, Oct. 27 -- all at 7 p.m. The Bobcats will then close out the regular season with home matches against Niagara and Canisius on Nov. 11-12, before the MAAC Tournament on Nov. 17-19.
Quinnipiac returns most of its key players from a year ago, as it will try to bring home its first conference title at the Division I level. Graduated All-MAAC middle hitter Allison Leigh, who ranked among the nation's leaders in blocks, will be a big hole to fill, along with defensive specialist Cody Michaels, who finished her career with over 1,000 digs. However, first-team All-MAAC outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) is back for her junior season, along with starting right side Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.), while MAAC All-Rookie selections Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.), Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), and Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) return for their sophomore campaigns.
