ATHENS, Georgia - Quinnipiac sophomore Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) shot a 75 (+3) for the NCAA Athens Regional Second Round for the top 18-hole performance in Quinnipiac's NCAA Tournament history. Kemmling's three-over tally passed Taylor Lambrou's 76 at the 2016 NCAA Bryan Regional.
Kemmling was locked in from the start and was second overall for the day through her first 14 holes. Kemmling opened with back-to-back pars on the 10th and 11th holes before a beautiful shot over the water onto the 12th green left her with a birdie putt. She then rattled off five-straight pars before posting a birdie on the par 5 18th hole.
At the turn, Kemmling bogeyed hole No. 1 before recording her third birdie of the afternoon - matching her three-round birdie total from the 2016 NCAA Bryan Regional. She then shot par on holes 3, 4 and 5 to sit at two-under with four holes to play. The day finally caught up to her as she bogeyed the last four holes - including a double bogey on the 16th - to finish at five-over for the front nine and three over for the round. Kemmling's performance on the back nine was a nine-stroke improvement from the previous day. After moving up nine spots from the first round, Kemmling heads into Wednesday's final round with a 159 (+15).
Luciana Tobia-Palza (La Paz, Bolivia) shed two strokes from her first-day score - one stroke on the front nine and one stroke on the back nine - to card an 80 (+8) for the afternoon. Her lone birdie of the day came on the 9th hole after a brilliant sand save set her up with a three-foot putt for birdie. Tobia-Palza now sits at 162 (+18) heading into the final day.
Alexandra Sazhin (New Fairfield, Connecticut) started the day even through her first three holes, capped off by a birdie on the 3rd hole. Her drive on the 13th hole plagued her round after it found water and set her up at eight-over heading to the 18th hole. Sazhin birdied that hole and made the turn to shoot par on the front nine's first four holes. Her third birdie of the day came on the 5th hole before she also birdied the 9th hole for a team-leading four birdies for the afternoon. Sazhin shaved six strokes off her first day score and completed the second round at 162 (+18).
Estefania Morales (Caracas, Venezuela) matched her first-day total with an 83 (+11) to stand at 166 (+22) heading into the final round. Morales started the day with a double bogey and a triple bogey before she shot par on the next three holes, birdied the 15th and shot par on two of her last three holes on the back nine. She rebounded down the stretch shooting par-or-better on four of her last five holes including a birdie on the 9th.
Quinnipiac will complete play at the NCAA Athens Regional on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 with a tee time of 9:09 a.m.
