Bobcats Score Victories in Hammer Throw (Carly Timpson), Discus Throw (Mikah Maples) and 4x100m Relay
AMHERST, Massachusetts – Nearing the midway point of the season, the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team is rounding into form with a solid list of performances put together on Saturday at the UMass Minuteman Invitational. The Bobcats claimed victories in the discus throw, hammer throw and 4x100m relay to highlight the action on the day.
Mikah Maples (Mowequa, Illinois) made headlines as the freshman won the discus throw event with a program record toss of 43.09m that bested the field of 17 competitors by more than four meters. Throwing in the event for the first time in her career, Maples set the program record (previously stood at 38.62m) by a full 4.47m.
Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) continued a great day in the field events for the Bobcats as she won the hammer throw with a toss of 52.01m. Timpson, the 2016 MAAC Hammer Throw Champion, won her first hammer throw event of the season which stands as the third such victory in her career.
The third and final event victory on the day for Quinnipiac came in the 4x100m relay as the grouping of Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York), Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti), Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) and Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) picked up the win over five teams with a time of 47.52 seconds that is good enough for the third-fastest all-time at Quinnipiac.
Jacque rounded out her impressive day with a pair of notable results in the 100m and 200m. Starting with the 200m, Jacque clocked in at under 25 seconds for the first time in her career, posting a personal-best time of 24.88 seconds which now stands third all-time in program history while she claimed fourth place out of 35 sprinters on Saturday. Jacque followed up with a sixth place finish in the 100m wherein she timed in at 12.39 seconds, just 0.01 seconds off her personal-best set at the Colonial Relays to open the 2017 outdoor season.
Another member of the Bobcats' winning 4x100m relay group in Pfrommer came up with a solid all-around day as she placed fourth with a season high 5.45m in the long jump. Pfrommer later came up with a time of 25.96 seconds (just 0.03 seconds shy of a personal-best) in the 200m which earned her 11th place out of 35 sprinters.
Quinnipiac's 800m contingent all came up with impressive outings headlined by a pair of top five finishes from Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) and Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey). Ried was the top finisher in the 800m for the Bobcats as she used a time of 2:13.09 to place third out of 33 while Caron was right behind in fifth place overall as she crossed the line in 2:14.90. Meghan Curtin (Cohocton, New York) nearly landed herself in the Top 10 as she placed 11th with a time of 2:22.24 in the event.
The Bobcats nearly added another relay victory to their total as the 4x400m team of Caron, Reid, Curtin and Darby Ginley (Warwick, New York) combined to clock in at 4:04.30 to claim second place out of seven teams competing in the event.
Jennifer Mears (Vernon, Connecticut) made a strong debut to open her season as she threw 40.12m to claim third place out of 11 in the javelin throw.
Meghan Scullin (Cumberland, Rhode Island) immediately vaulted to third all-time at Quinnipiac with her jump of 5.32m in the long jump which earned her eighth place out of 17 competitors.
Kaitlyn Hebert (Glastonbury, Connecticut) continued her recent string of impressive 1500m results as her most-recent performance on Saturday earned her fifth place and a new personal-best time of 4:43.88.
Other Bobcats who performed well included Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) who placed fourth in the discus throw (38.62m) and seventh in the shot put (11.78m). Melissa Solomon (Dorchester, Massachusetts) came through with a pair of ninth place finishes in the 200m (25.79) and 400m (1:00.70). Karissa Laramie (Tolland, Connecticut) placed seventh in the 400m (1:00.56). Emily Joerg (Poughkeepsie, New York) set a personal-best with 1.56m in the high jump to claim eighth place out of 13.
