Bobcats Claim Victories in the 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, Hammer Throw, High Jump and Javelin Throw
STONY BROOK, New York – The Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team claimed victories in five events at the Wolfie Invitational while earning second place out of the eight teams competing in Stony Brook's home meet.
Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) returned to action in a big way as the junior claimed her second 100m hurdles title of the season (in three appearances) as she dominated the field with a time of 13.56 seconds. Lee topped the field of 14 competitors with the runner-up posting a time of 13.84 seconds (-0.28 seconds behind Lee). The victory is Lee's ninth hurdles title of the 2016-17 track season as she claimed seven first place finishes in the indoor campaign.
Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) dominated the field events, claiming victories in her two appearances in the hammer throw and high jump. Just one week removed from claiming the UMass Minuteman Invitational hammer throw title, Timpson won the event for the second consecutive week throwing 51.31m on Saturday. Timpson now has fourth hammer throw titles to her name as just a sophomore at Quinnipiac. She then followed up in the high jump with a field-topping 1.65m that cleared the field of 12 competitors.
Jennifer Mears (Vernon, Connecticut) threw over 40m in back-to-back weeks while her throw of 40.17m in the javelin on Saturday was good enough for her first title of the season (second straight at the Wolfie Invitational) and the fourth of her career in her signature event. The javelin throw was one of the best events on the day for the Bobcats as Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) and Jessica Caso (Poughkeepsie, New York) placed second and fourth, respectively. Reid threw 35.19m while Caso tossed 32.80m.
The fifth and final event win on the day came in the 400m hurdles as the Bobcats claimed victories in both hurdles (100m and 400m) events on the afternoon. Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey) topped the field for her first career 400m hurdles victory, clocking in at 1:02.72 to best the field of 11 competitors. Jillian DiGiacinto (Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey) was right in the mix as well, crossing the line in 1:06.14 for a fourth place showing in the event.
Quinnipiac fought for and nearly claimed wins in the 4x100m relay as the team of Lee, Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York), Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) and Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) posted a time of 47.57 seconds that paced the Bobcats second out of six teams and just 0.23 seconds behind the event champion Stony Brook.
Yet another runner-up finish for the Bobcats came in the 3000m as Ellie Songer (Webster, New York) produced the best run of her career, clocking in with a personal-best 10:19.54. Songer knocked more than 10 seconds off her previous career high in the event while finishing a more than respectful second out of a field of 20 runners.
One of the more successful events as a team for the Bobcats was the 800m as Darby Ginley (Warwick, New York), Reid and Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) all found themselves in the Top 10. Ginley managed the best time of the day at 2:17.72 which earned her third place, Reid crossed the line in 2:19.77 to give her fourth and Caron placed eighth with a time of 2:23.03.
Jacque's day continued with a pair of third places finishes in the 100m (12.29 seconds) and 200m (25.07). Kaitlyn Hebert (Glastonbury, Connecticut) paced a group of 14 Bobcats competing in the 1500m as she crossed the line in seventh place with a time of 4:43.07. Melissa Solomon (Dorchester, Massachusetts) managed a fifth place showing in the 400m with a time of 59.57 seconds. Maria Ricalton (Canton, New York) placed third in the 3000m steeplechase as she clocked in at 11:50.38. Pfrommer and Meredith Ramsey (Penacook, New Hampshire) were solid in the 200m with seventh (25.69) and 10th place (25.84) showings, respectively.
In the remainder of the field events, Pisciotta (4th, 5.13m) and Pfrommer (6th, 5.06m) put forth solid efforts in the long jump. Emily Joerg (Poughkeepsie, New York) also managed a fifth place showing in the high jump at 1.50m.
Quinnipiac heads into the final week of the regular season where the Bobcats will compete at the Penn Relays and then head to the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 30th in a meet where the team will honor its 10 senior class members prior to the start of competition.
