HAMDEN, Conn - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team defeated the Binghamton Bearcats, 6-1, in a non-conference duel at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
The win was Quinnipiac's fourth in a row and moved the Bobcats' record to 9-7 (4-0 MAAC), while Binghamton fell to 4-14 on the season.
Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta), Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) all earned two wins on the day.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match, where Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Rodriguez were set to compete, but Binghamton did not have enough players, so Quinnipiac won the match by default. The No. 2 doubles match ensued, where reigning MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week winner, Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Oliphant teamed up against Allison Roma and Paulina Tafter. The Bobcats' duo took the match, 6-1 to secure the Quinnipiac doubles point to give the team a 1-0 lead. The win was the duo's seventh in a row, preserving their perfect 7-0 record as a team this season. Quinnipiac secured the sweep after Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Horton teamed up to defeat Annie DiMuro and Olga Ostrovetsky, 7-5. The win was the duo's 21st of the season, which is tops on the team.
The duel moved to singles play with Quinnipiac holding a 1-0, which they added to after Oliphant won the No. 6 singles match by default because Binghamton did not have six players. The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead after Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) defeated Maya Haykal in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2. Quinnipiac clinched the duel win after Rodriguez defeated Tafter in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3.
Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) kept the winning streak rolling, defeating Roma in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3. The win was Lohaphaisan's third in a row in singles play and was her tenth victory of the season in singles.
Lu then took the court in the No. 1 match against DiMuro and fell in straights, 6-2 and 6-1. Horton closed the match with a win over Ostrovetsky in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-5.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Tuesday, April 18, when the Bobcats host MAAC rival Fairfield at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
