NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Monmouth goalie Nick Hreshko had a key save on the doorstep that sprung an end-to-end fast break for the game-winning goal from Bryce Wasserman as the Hawks knocked off the defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team 8-7 in double overtime in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday night at Yale's Reese Stadium.
Junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had four goals in the loss to extend his goal-scoring streak to 16 games for Quinnipiac, which falls to 1-5 on the year and 0-1 in the MAAC with the loss. The Bobcats also see their 10-game win streak in conference games snapped after going a perfect 6-0 in league play last year. Monmouth improves to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the league with the win.
Quinnipiac sophomore midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) tied the score with 3:04 left in regulation, his second goal of the contest as he improved his goal-scoring streak to 13 games. Cuomo made a bid for the hat trick in the second overtime, as he slipped in between two Hawks defenders and got a clean look on net. He went low, and Hreshko was able to go down to block the shot. The ensuing ground ball rolled away from goal, where it was scooped up by Chandler Vanderbeek, who leaked out and raced end-to-end. After drawing the Quinnipiac defense, he passed to his left to Wasserman, who was able to pick out the upper corner with 1:30 left in the second overtime to win the game.
Senior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.), who missed the last three games with an injury, returned to the lineup and had 10 saves, including a huge one just before the final buzzer of the first overtime, denying Monmouth's Griffin Figel from in close.
Goals were at a premium the entire game, as the Bobcats led 4-3 at halftime behind three goals from Feldman, who recorded his hat trick on a blind shot with his back to goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.). Monmouth scored 16 seconds into the second half off a Quinnipiac turnover, and led 5-4 before Cuomo beat the third-quarter buzzer to tie the score back up at 5-5 with just 0.4 seconds on the clock.
Monmouth went ahead 6-5 on a man-up goal from Anthony Sardo with 11:12 left in the fourth, but the Bobcats answered on a 6-on-4, with Feldman scoring his fourth of the game off a Cuomo feed. Chris Daly put the hawks back up with 5:28 from the doorstep on a Figel feed, before Cuomo was able to answer by bouncing one under the crossbar.
Quinnipiac finished with a 47-33 edge in shots, including 20-8 in the first quarter, but had a hard time finding the target in the early going as only five of its 20 first quarter shots were on net. Hreshko finished with 12 saves for Monmouth while Figel led the Hawks offensively with two goals and an assist.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday, March 26 when it hosts Detroit Mercy for an 11 a.m. game at Reese Stadium.
