The Quinnipiac men's cross country team is looking for redemption in the MAAC this season as the Bobcats hit the course at Holmdel Park in New Jersey on Saturday afternoon looking to improve on consecutive seventh place finishes at the last two MAAC Championships. The Bobcats are coming in well-rested and plenty motivated as Quinnipiac and the rest of the field will be looking to challenge 26-time defending MAAC Champion Iona.
2016 MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Quinnipiac finished seventh at the 2016 MAAC Championships from the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney. Graduate student Brendan Copley earned All-MAAC honors for the third time to highlight the action on the day for the Bobcats. Iona won their 26th consecutive MAAC title with a dominating performance as eight Gaels claimed the Top 8 overall spots in the standings. The Gaels amassed 15 total team points which is the lowest possible score in the title race. Canisius (102), Marist (104), Manhattan (109), Siena (141), Monmouth (158), Quinnipiac (175), Rider (208), Fairfield (223), Niagara (308) and Saint Peter's (365) rounded out the standings.
2017 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Ryan Ansel – Junior – Danbury, Conn.
Establishing himself as the top runner on the team, Ansel has elevated into one of the premier runners in the region following his All-New England showing. Ansel started the season with a bang, placing fifth overall at the Monmouth Invitational and he followed that up with his All-New England 13th place finish. A year after placing 79th at the 2016 MAAC Championships, Ansel figures to be in the mix for an All-MAAC performance on Saturday.
Tommy Consalvo – Sophomore – Brookfield, Conn.
Consalvo seems to be rising at just the right time as his 47th place finish at the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 14 was one of the best outings of his two-year career. Consalvo was the top runner for Quinnipiac at the prestigious meet while she clocked in with the best 8k time of his career (25:14). The top-returning finisher from the 2016 MAAC Championships (55th place) currently on the team, Consalvo's experience and form will be key to the Bobcats' success on Saturday.
Michael Kiernan – Sophomore – Warwick, R.I.
Consistently at the top for the Bobcats in every meet he has competed, Kiernan has never finished worse than fourth on the team in any of his nine career appearances. In four meet this season, Kiernan has finished at least third on the team and peaked with his 20th place finish (second on the team) at the Monmouth Invitational at Holmdel Park on Sept. 16.
Ben Lanza – Junior – Middletown, Conn.
A candidate to break out, Lanza has turned in several solid meets this season which includes an impressive 28th place finish at the Monmouth Invitational wherein he tied a career-best placing third on the team. He finished among the five-fastest Bobcats in three of his four appearances on the season and looks to carry over that success into what will be his second MAAC Championship appearance.
Connor McAlary – Senior – Shoreham, N.Y.
The senior leader on the Bobcat squad, McAlary has placed as high as fourth on the team this season at the New England Championships. McAlary has 20 career appearances to his name, the most of any competitor heading into Saturday's conference championship meet.
