HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac women's tennis will look to continue its winning streak to three matches when they welcome in the Saint Peter's Peacocks Saturday afternoon. Quinnipiac defeated Rider 7-0 and Sacred Heart 6-1.
RECAP OF MATCH WITH SACRED HEART
- Junior Jennifer Lu and sophomore Layla Rodriguez won at No. 1 doubles and then earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
- Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan and freshman Scarlett Blydenburgh won at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Bobcats, and then picked up singles wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
- Freshman Courtney Nash won a quick two-setter at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-0) to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
- Lu picked up the third point for the Bobcats with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2.
- Rodriguez won the clinching point at No. 3 singles when she finished off a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
- Freshmen Payton Bradley and Dominique Vasile won their doubles match at No. 2. Bradley won the first set at No. 1 singles but ended up falling 10-6 in a third-set tiebreaker to Brianne Lauria in the final match to complete, earning Sacred Heart its only point.
TOP STORYLINES
- The Bobcats dominated their first MAAC matchup of the year, beating the Rider Broncs, 7-0.
- Payton Bradley (Downingtown, Pennsylvania) obtained two victories in her first MAAC matchup of the year. She picked up a victory in doubles competition with Dominique Vasile (Bingham Farms, Michigan), 6-1.
- Stephanie Yanosov (Cherry Hill, New Jersey) scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory in singles play.
- Yanosov teamed with Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) to score a 6-3 victory
- Lu scored a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 victory over Rider in singles play.
- Rounding out the freshman, Courtney Nash (Andover, Massachusetts) delivered a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory in singles play.
- Scarlett Blydenburgh( Chatham, New Jersey) and Amy Zammarieh (Trumbull, Connecticut) Scored a perfect 6-0 victory over Rider in doubles play.
- Blydenburgh followed up her doubles victory with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in singles play.
- Lu and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) participated in the Hofstra Invitational.
- The duo combined for three wins over the weekend, including two wins in the Doubles A bracket to advance to the Finals.
- One of their victories came over including a victory over Fordham's Carina Ma and Estelle Wong, 7-6 (8-3). Ma and Wong were undefeated to start the 2017-18 season until being defeated by Lu and Rodriguez.
- Lu also scored a victory in the Singles A bracket, 6-4,1-6,12-10, before falling in the quarterfinals.
- Lu also competed in the 2017 Oracle/ ITA Masters at the Malibu Racquet Club in Malibu, California. Lu fell to the top-seeded competitor in the field, Ena Shibahara of UCLA, and also competed in mixed doubles with Javier Restrepo from Marist.
- Vasile picked up three victories to win the B Singles Consolation bracket at the Army West Point Invitational, defeating Michal Matson from Seton Hall, 8-2, in the championship.
- Early in the 2017-18 season, Lu won two straight consolation brackets in A singles at the Stony Brook and Quinnipiac Invitationals. Lu and Visale also made it to the finals of the Doubles A Tournament at the Quinnipiac Invitational before falling 7-5 in the championship match to Fordham's No. 1 doubles team.
- Quinnipiac has won the last four MAAC Championships since joining the league in the 2013-14 season. The Bobcats have still never lost a MAAC match, going a combined 38-0 in the last four years in both the regular season and postseason. There have been some stern challenges along the way, including a comeback 4-3 win over Marist in the 2016 MAAC Championship match, and a narrow 4-2 win over Siena in last season's finals.
- Quinnipiac dominated their last showdown with Ryder, winning 7-0, in their contest on October 8 last year.
