1/14/2017 5:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) scored a personal-best 27 points and big men Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) and Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.) each had double-doubles as the Quinnipiac men's basketball team took a 97-91 overtime home win over Iona on Saturday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Daniels finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Smith had 15 points and 11 rebounds, the first time two Quinnipiac teammates have had double-doubles in the same game since Smith and Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) did it at Maine last year in another overtime contest. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 7-11 overall and get back to 4-4 in the MAAC. Quinnipiac also improves to 3-5 in the series with Iona, snapping a five-game losing streak, with two of the wins coming in overtime (the first was in 2012 at the Paradise Jam). Iona sees its record slip to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in the MAAC.
Dixon had 16 of his points in the first half, while Daniels had 16 of his in the second half, including six straight points in the final 2:42 to turn a 75-71 Iona lead into a 77-75 Quinnipiac advantage with 1:09 left. Smith had a steal to give the Bobcats a chance to seal the win, but Quinnipiac was unable to score on its next possession, and Iona tied the score on a fast break lay-up from Jordan Washington with 23 seconds left. Dixon had a tough runner in the closing seconds hit off the rim, and Smith's tip-in attempt missed as the horn sounded.
However, Quinnipiac dominated the overtime, with freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) scoring nine of his 15 points in the extra session. A dunk from Smith off a bounce pass from junior guard Reggie Oliver (Apopka, Fla.) put the Bobcats ahead 80-77 and after Iona made a foul shot, the Bobcats scored the next eight points to take a 10-point lead. Kiss started the run with a 15-foot jumper, Dixon hit two foul shots, and Oliver hit a three-pointer to make the score 87-78. After Kiss split two foul shots at the line to make it an 88-78 lead with 1:25 left, Schadrac Casimir made two foul shots to close the lead to eight, but Kiss responded with a dagger three-pointer to make the score 91-80 with 1:16 to go and the Bobcats were able to hold on from there.
Quinnipiac trailed by 10 points in the first half, but Dixon caught fire to help the Bobcats tie the score 35-35 at the break. After Taylor Bessick put the Gaels ahead 25-15 with 7:32 left in the half, Daniels hit a foul shot and Smith hit a three-pointer to make the score 25-19. Dixon then hit four straight three-pointers, the last coming with 1:25 left to close the Iona lead to 35-33. After Dixon earned a defensive rebound, he fed Smith for a 15-foot jumper to end the half with the score tied.
The second half was tight for the first 10 minutes, but Iona got a leg up when senior guard Sam Cassell Jr. hit two straight three-pointers to give the Gaels a 67-59 lead with 7:41 to play. The Bobcats responded, though, as Daniels scored down low, and Kiss fed Smith for an alley-oop dunk on a fast break to make it a 67-63 game with 6:54 to go. Iona led 72-65 after Deyshonee Much beat the shot clock with an 18-footer with 4:31 left, but Smith had a putback and Daniels had a basket in the paint to make it a 72-69 contest. E,J, Crawford had a three-point play for Iona, but Quinnipiac scored the next eight points on two Dixon foul shots and three Daniels baskets to take the late lead.
Quinnipiac only had eight turnovers in the entire contest against Iona's trapping defense, while recording 21 assists. Daniels' 22 points was a season high, while Smith's 15 matched his season high. Smith also had five blocks on the day (including the one pictured when he stopped a dunk attempt from Much). Washington had 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead five Iona players in double figures.
The Bobcats will be back in action in six days, when they host Canisius for a 7 p.m. contest at the TD Bank Sports Center.
