Belskie Leads Field Hockey Past Villanova, 5-2

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pennsylvania – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team defeated Villanova, 5-2, in a BIG EAST Conference game in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, behind two goals from Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, New Jersey). With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-1 in conference play and 2-8 overall while Villanova falls to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST.
Belskie scored two second-half goals for the Bobcats, extending her goal-scoring streak to two games. Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with nearly 12 minutes remaining in the first half, while Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania) each chipped in a goal in the second half. Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) led the defensive charge for the Bobcats, recording three defensive saves on the day giving her 10 on the season, which is tops in the nation.
Villanova's Abby Siana scored the first goal of the contest nearly 16 minutes into the game off a corner. Allison Sayia picked up an assist on the play when she sent the ball into the circle, where Emma McLaughlin stopped and passed to Siana, who launched it past Quinnipiac goaltender Olivia Golini (York, Maine).
The Bobcats answered back nearly six minutes later when Reilly was able to score her sixth goal of the season. Michelle Federico (Chesire, Connecticut) sent the ball to the top of the circle off a corner, where King flipped the ball right for Barlow. Barlow was able to direct the ball to Reilly at the stroke mark, who put it in. It was Reilly's 22nd career goal, which moves her into a tie for ninth place all-time with Kristen McCarthy '06. It was also Barlow's first assist of the season.
Quinnipiac broke the 1-1 nine minutes into the second half when Belskie scored her first goal of the game and second of the season. Ines Ruiz Martinez received the pass in the circle off a corner and dumped it left to Belskie who directed it into the back of the net. With the goal, Belskie was able to extend her goal-scoring streak to two games.
Villanova tied the game almost two minutes later when Sayia was able to score on a penalty stroke.
The Bobcats took the lead for good when Barlow scored her second goal of the season with 19:47 remaining in the half. Barlow ran into the offensive zone after sitting for a green card. Reilly immediately passed the ball to Barlow, who put it past the goaltender. It was Reilly's second assist of the season.
Shemo was able to get into the box score when she scored off a corner with 7:35 remaining in the second half. Felicia Costanzo (Yorktown Heights, New York) received the ball off a corner and sent it to the opposite post for Shemo, who rocketed it past the goaltender, putting the Bobcats up 4-2. It was Shemo's first goal of the season and Costanzo's second assist of the season.
The Bobcats tacked on their fifth final goal of the day with 2:24 left in the game, despite being a man down because of a yellow card. Ines Ruiz Martinez received the ball at the top of the circle off a corner and sent it to Belskie, who launched it into the back of the net for her second goal of the day and third on the season. It was Martinez's second assist of the day and third of the season.
The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, Oct. 2 when return home to take on Hofstra in a non-conference match-up at 3 p.m.
