NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Hofstra, 3-2, in a back-and-forth battle at Yale University Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 2-9 on the year while Hofstra wins its sixth-straight game to improve to 8-4 on the season.
Quinnipiac leading scorer Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season while junior Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) had a goal and an assist.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the game when the Bobcats were awarded a corner after several minutes of sustained pressure in Hofstra's defensive zone. On the insert, the ball skipped over stick-stop Dayna Barlow's (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) stick and was picked up by Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, New Jersey). Belskie handed the ball back to Barlow who fired the ball to the opposite post for Reilly. Reilly held the ball and waited for a shooting lane before converting on her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Six minutes later, Madison Reed cleaned up a loose ball in front of Quinnipiac's cage after a broken corner set to tie the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Hofstra was awarded another corner. Carissa Witmer handled the ball and fired a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked by Felicia Costanzo (Yorktown Heights, New York). With the ball loose, Lara Bittel's bid on an open goal was stopped by Belskie who came up with the defensive save. Bittle was then awarded a penalty stroke, which she converted on to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead heading into the half.
With 15 minutes to play, Madison Sauve carried the ball down the wing, deep into the circle before centering a pass to Claudio Marin Sampler. Marin Sampler one-timed the ball past Quinnipiac goalkeeper Olivia Golini (York, Maine) to give Hofstra a 3-1 lead.
With 15 minutes to play, Kiera Godusky (Allentown, Pennsylvania) took a pass from Belskie on the wing and played it into the circle to Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania). Shemo made a move around a Hofstra defender and zipped a pass across the crease to Barlow on the opposite corner. Barlow re-directed the shot on goal for her third goal of the season to cut Hofstra's lead to 3-2.
Quinnipiac returns to action when host Providence in a BIG EAST Conference match-up on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 12 PM at Yale University's Johnson Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
