McCoy's First Career Goal Lifts Bobcats to Victory
Behind freshman Conor McCoy's first collegiate career goal just 7:57 into action, the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team defeated Fordham, 1-0, for its first win of the 2016 season on Friday night in the Bronx, New York.
The Bobcats move to 1-2 on the season, while Fordham falls to 0-2-1.
"We were not at our best today from an aesthetic standpoint, but we got the early goal and defended really well against a good team," Quinnipiac head coach Eric Da Costa said. "At the end of the day it was about getting a result and keeping a clean sheet so we accomplished our goals in that regard."
McCoy's goal, a game-winner, came just 7:57 into action on an unmarked header. Senior James Doig booted a corner kick into the box, and McCoy was able to head the ball into the left side of the net to give the Bobcats the 1-0 advantage.
"Conor still needs time to settle in and that will take some time," Da Costa said. "He was just cleared and this is his very first look at live action with the team. The early goal certainly gave him confidence and helped lift his team so we hope he pushes forward from here."
Freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made 3 saves, earning his first career shutout on the road.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its few scoring chances following McCoy's goal in the eighth minute. Fordham outshot the Bobcats 15-6, but Iakovidis was up to the challenge.
The Rams' best chance came in the 81st minute, as sophomore Janos Loebe – the team's leading scorer in 2015 – ripped a shot from just outside the box that hit off the crossbar. The ball deflected back to Fordham's Connor Deflilippis, who shot wide left.
Aside from McCoy's goal, the Bobcats recorded three other shots on goal in the contest from Rashawn Dally, Shaquille Huggins and Eamon Whelan.
Quinnipiac travels back to Hamden to start a three-game home stand following the win. The Bobcats play on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Lafayette (3 p.m.),
