GATHERING MOMENTUM
Quinnipiac men's soccer enters Sunday's match against Lafayette having just won its first game of the 2016 season on Friday night. The Bobcats topped Fordham, 1-0, on the road behind Freshman Conor McCoy's first-career goal in the 8tth minute of action. Freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made three saves in the winning effort for his first-career shutout.
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
Lafayette is 0-2-0 on the season, playing to a pair of 1-0 losses against Saint Francis-Brooklyn and Albany to begin the 2016 slate. The Leopards square off with Fairfield on Friday, before heading to Hamden to face Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
Junior center back Christian Moyse, who was selected All-League second team in 2015, is a key component to Lafayette's attack. Moyse has started 35 games on defense in just two collegiate seasons. Junior keeper Brad Seeber has started both games in net so far for the Leopards, a year after he posted a 0.86 goals-against average in 13 games. He made 45 saves in total last year.
Seniors Ryan Egan (2g, 1a) and Ben Marks (1g, 3a) return to Lafayette's scoring attack. Newcomer Evan Vare, the 2015 Gatorade Pennsylvania Boys Soccer Player of the Year, also figures to play a key role in the offense.
LAST MEETING WITH LAFAYETTE
Quinnipiac and Lafayette played to a 1-1 draw in their last meeting (Sept. 7, 2013) in Pennsylvania. The Leopards struck first when Nate Arronson connected with Jeff McLaughlin in the 86th minute of the match. Just 23 seconds later, however, Simon Hinde (Canberra, Australia) netted his third goal of the year to tie things for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Borja Angoitia made 4 saves for Quinnipiac.
BACK ON THE ATTACK
The Bobcats return four of their top five scorers in 2016. Sophomore Matthew Taylor(Dublin, Ireland) had two goals and three assists in 2015, Rothenbuecher recorded two goals and one assist, senior Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) had two scores and an assist and Dally had one goal and two assists.
VETERAN REINFORCEMENTS
Doig and junior Shaquille Huggins also bring plenty of collegiate experience to the Bobcats 2016 roster. Doig started in 38 games during his first two seasons at Quinnipiac, scoring twice with nine assists in that span. He suffered a season-ending injury during the third game of the 2015 year. Huggins has played in 35 contests through his first two seasons.
DALLY EARNS SPOT ON JAMAICA U20 TEAM
Forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, CT) earned some impressive international experience this summer, nabbing a spot on the Jamaican National Under-20 Team. Dally joined Jamaica for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-20 Qualifiers in June. Jamaica went 2-1 in qualifiers with wins over host Dominican Republic and Dominica.
QUINNIPIAC PICKED SEVENTH IN MAAC
The Bobcats were picked to finish seventh in the MAAC in a preseason poll of the league's coaches. Quinnipiac received 51 points in the poll, putting it in between Marist in sixth place with 57 points and Canisius in eighth place with 47. Monmouth was selected as the favorite (120 points), while Rider (103 points) finished No. 2.
HOME SWEET HOME
Quinnipiac men's soccer opens up a three-game home stand against Lafayette on Sunday, Sept. 4. The Bobcats enter the new year looking to return to their old form, which saw them win three straight regular season conference titles from 2012-14 (2012 in the Northeast Conference and 2013-14 in the MAAC).
Last season, Quinnipiac posted a 2-11-6 overall record (1-5-4 in the MAAC). The Bobcats have now lost six consecutive season openers dating back to September 5, 2009 when they tied Yale, 1-1 in the first game of the year.
