Bobcats Down Lafayette, 2-0
HAMDEN, Connecticut - Behind a pair of goals from Eamon Whelan and Matthew Taylor – and a combined shutout in goal from Chrysostomos Iakovidis and Brian Westerman – the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team defeated Lafayette 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the QU Soccer Field.
The win marks Quinnipiac's second in a row, moving the Bobcats to 2-2-0 on the season. Rashawn Dally set up both of the Bobcats' goals, giving him a team-high two assists on the season.
"I still feel like we're a young team… Certainly results are important, and we want to be in position to have this opportunity – to win games," Quinnipiac head coach Eric Da Costa said. "We want to continue to grow, continue to get better. If we're going to do that, we have to pay attention to small details."
Quinnipiac had a scoring chance just 39:34 into the game when Dally got free inside the 18, but the forward ripped a shot over the goal to keep the game tied. The Bobcats had another chance to break the lead just five minutes later when Max Rothenbuecher delivered a corner kick to Dally. Dally was able to get his head on the ball, but it went straight into the hands of Lafayetete goalkeeper Brad Seeber (3 saves).
Quinnipiac's first goal came with 26:26 remaining in the first half. Dally, with control inside the box, was able to pass the ball over to Whelan with the back of his heel. Whelan, a freshman, struck the ball into the back of an open net for his second goal of the season to make it 1-0. Rothenbuecher was also credited with an assist on the play.
Iakovidis, who had six saves in net for the Bobcats, made perhaps his best stop of the game with 7:40 left in the first half. The freshman made a leaping grab amidst a scrum of players to prevent the Leopards from tying the game.
Quinnipiac netted its second goal of the game with 19:30 remaining in the second half. Dally started the play again, streaking up the left side of the field. When Lafayette keeper Brad Seeber rushed toward Dally, the sophomore delivered a perfect pass to Taylor, and the sophomore put it home for his first goal of the year to make it 2-0 Bobcats.
Westerman relieved Iakovidis in net for the Bobcats late in the second half, recording one save and preserving the shutout.
Freshman Jeppe Haehre saved what would have been a late Lafayette goal, blasting the ball away from the goal line just prior to the ball crossing into the goal.
"We're a team that's still growing, and we're going to continue to grow," Da Costa said. "If we're going to do that it's not just about getting wins, it's about how well we are winning, and are we getting better the next time around."
Quinnipiac is back at home on Saturday, Sept. 4, hosting UMass Lowell at 2 p.m. Following Saturday's match, the Bobcats are back at home for a third-straight time hosting Yale on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4:30 p.m.
