NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac field hockey captain Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) scored twice to lead the Bobcats to a 4-2 win against Georgetown in the first BIG EAST Conference game in program history. With the win, Quinnipiac opens the year at 1-0 in BIG EAST play while they also pick up their first victory of the season to improve to 1-6 on the year. Georgetown opens the year at 0-1 in the conference while they drop their fifth-straight game to move to 2-5 on the season.
Federico led three Bobcat scorers in the contest that saw Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) score her team-leading fifth goal of the year and Ines Ruiz-Martinez (Madrid, Spain) score her first career goal. In goal, Quinnipiac freshman Olivia Golini (York, Maine) stopped four of Georgetown's six shots on goal for her first career victory.
Reilly's goal came just under six minutes into the game when Rachel Skonecki denied Quinnipiac's Federico on a shot from point-blank range off a corner. Reilly was waiting to pick up the loose ball and slam home her fifth marker of the season. The goal made Reilly the 10th player in Quinnipiac history to reach 50 career points.
Midway through the first half, Georgetown's Megan Parsons tied the game at the 18:24 mark with her second goal of the season. Parsons carried the ball into the circle, stepped between two Bobcat defenders and fired a shot on goal. Golini kick-stopped the ball, but it bounced over her foot and trickled over the goal line to knot the game at 1-1.
Just before the end of the first half, Ruiz-Martinez found herself all alone in front of the cage when a shot caromed off of Skonecki's right leg and rested on the Quinnipiac freshman's stick at the top of the circle. Ruiz-Martinez wound and blasted a shot that echoed off the back of the cage to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
Coming out of halftime, Federico scored the first of two goals on a pass from junior Felicia Costanzo (Yorktown Heights, New York). Costanzo stick-handled around a player on the wing and slipped a pass to Federico to the left of Skonecki, who spun around her defender and slapped the ball past the Hoyas' goalkeeper to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead. She added her second goal of the day with just under 15 minutes to play to nudge the Bobcats' lead to three goals at 4-1.
Georgetown's Helena Masiello scored on a deflection in front of the cage on a shot from the top of the circle by Michaela Bruno but Quinnipiac was able to hold onto the two-goal lead through the end of regulation.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 when it faces Bucknell in a non-conference match-up to be played at Columbia University at 4 p.m.
