Day One Results
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team wrapped up day one of competition at the New England Championships on the campus of Southern Connecticut State in a tie for 17th place out of 75 teams with a total of four team points. Jenny Mears (Vernon, Connecticut) highlighted the Bobcats' effort on the day with a program record in the javelin throw. Northeastern owns the early lead with 47.5 points through six scored events.
The star on the day for the Bobcats was the success of Mears who claimed fifth place in the javelin throw with a program record 42.34m. After having gone two full seasons without throwing over 40m, Mears has come up with throws of 40m+ in each of her last four appearances. Just last week, Mears placed a career-best third at the MAAC Championships with a throw of 41.12m and after today's performance she only bettered her own program record with the throw of 42.34m. She scored four points in the event and accounted for all four points scored by Quinnipiac on the day.
Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York) came away with a very strong showing in the 400m preliminaries as she clocked in at 56.50 seconds, good enough for ninth place out of 30 sprinters. Even though the ninth place result leaves her one spot from the 400m finals, Baker still finishes her career with a career-best at the New England Championships. Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) also concluded her career in the 400m with a time of 59.22 seconds.
Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) and Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) took their usual place in the long jump competition, finishing in 13th and 16th place, respectively, out of 22 competitors. Pisciotta posted a jump of 5.31m to top her list of performances for the day while Pfrommer jumped 5.21m.
The long distance events featured a wide array of Bobcats as Katey Veron (Franklin Square, New York) placed 21st out of 30 in the 5000m with a personal-best time of 18:13.34. Veron knocked more than 36 seconds off her previous career high with her finishing time. In the 10,000m, three Bobcats earned results as Ashley Carle (Jackson, New Jersey), Kristina Ketchum (Foxborough, Massachusetts) and Victoria Maceira (Bethel, Connectiut) all competed. Carle placed 14th with a time of 39:54.87 while Ketchum crossed the line in 18th (40:21.61) and Maceira took 21st place (40:45.43).
The lone remaining event that featured Quinnipiac was the 400m hurdles as Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey) crossed the line in 1:06.69 earning a 26th place finish.
Quinnipiac will be back in action for the conclusion of the New England Championships starting at 10 AM from the Jess Dow Field on the campus of SCSU.
