Casey Herzog Registers Game-Winning Hit While Throwing One-Hitter
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac softball team swept the Yale Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon, taking the first game, 3-1, before winning the second in walk-off fashion, 1-0. Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) recorded the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh of game two while also pitching a complete game one-hitter.
The doubleheader represented much more than just a pair of games for the two programs, as both the Bobcats and Bulldogs honored the memory of Chris Labbadia. On Jan. 16, 2016, assistant QU coach Lynn Labbadia's 19 year old son and the brother of Yale shortstop Brittany Labaddia, was tragically killed in a car accident. Chris will be forever known for his love, acceptance, loyalty, passion and laughter. Leading up to the game and at the game, the Bobcats and Yale accepted donations for his memorial fund with a team goal of $2,500. GAME 1
After five scoreless innings to start game, both teams scored all their runs in the sixth. Yale took a one run lead in the top of the frame before the Bobcats answered with three runs of their own.
Quinnipiac recorded seven hits and one walk in the first contest while leaving seven runners on base. Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) led the offense with two singles and two RBI's in three at bats. Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) was perfect from the plate, going 1-for-1 with a run batted in.
Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) pitched a complete game in the circle for the Bobcats, picking up the win to improve to 5-9 on the season. Robey allowed just one run and five hits while striking out four batters.
The Bulldogs led off the top of the sixth with a walk before the runner advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Terra Jerpbak stepped into the box for Yale and connected on an RBI single up the middle to score the Bulldogs' only run of the game.
In the bottom of the frame, Quinnipiac responded with three runs on three hits to take a 3-1 advantage. Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) led off the inning with a hit by pitch, but was thrown out at second when Robey grounded into a fielder's choice. With one out, Robey stole her third base of the game and advanced to third on a base hit by Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida). Troyan then drove in the game-tying run with a single up the middle. Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) came in to pinch run for Troyan and was able to steal second base with Robey being held at third. Finley then stepped into the box and drove in two runs with a single through the middle of the infield.
The Bullldogs threatened to tie the score in the top of the seventh but Robey handled the pressure to get the Bobcats out of the inning unscathed. Yale put runners on second and third with two outs, before Robey recorded the final out on a ground ball to herself in the circle.
GAME 2
Herzog submitted her best performance of her Bobcat career on Wednesday afternoon. The sophomore pitched seven innings of one hit ball while allowing no runs and striking out six batters. After giving up a walk to the leadoff hitter, Herzog retired the next 14 Yale Bulldogs. In addition to her impressive outing in the circle, Herzog went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Robey led the Quinnipiac offense with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate in game two.
With two outs in the seventh, Larsen gave the Bobcats some hope, reaching first with a walk. Czaja came in to pinch run and advanced to second on a wild pitch by the Yale pitcher. Herzog stepped into the box and smashed a single up the middle to score Czaja and complete the sweep.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Thursday, Apr. 14 against the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Quinnipiac will visit Sacred Heart in Fairfield for a 3:30 p.m. matchup
