
QU Men's Tennis Loses First MAAC Contest in Tough Loss to Marist, 4-3

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team lost a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon, 4-3, to the Marist Red Foxes at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts in a rematch of the 2015 MAAC Semifinals.
The loss snaps Quinnipiac's five-match winning streak as they fall to 12-7 on the season and 4-1 in the MAAC with their first conference loss. Marist improves to 13-3 (5-0 MAAC) with its seventh straight victory.
Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) was the only Bobcat to win both of his matches on the day, good for his 90th career victory. Kuwert got wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles for the Bobcats.
Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) won his sixth consecutive singles match with a big win for the Bobcats at No. 1 singles in three sets. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) won his single-season career-high 21st singles match of the season and 29th overall victory this season with the two-set win at No. 3 singles. Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) also won his 29th match of the season at No. 1 doubles with Kuwert.
The Bobcats won the first doubles match of the afternoon over the Red Foxes as Kuwert and Zaretsky defeated Justin Chanthalangsy and Jan Dernic, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles. Just after that match ended, Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher wrapped up a win at No. 2 doubles over Ezaka and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey), 6-4. The Red Foxes secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win by Joe Motta and Fredrik Bjerke over Rozenstein and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York).
Singles play brought three wins for each team as Marist jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Chanthalangsy picked up the first win of the day via retirement in his match against Zaretsky as Chanthalangsy was leading, 5-2, when the match was called. Marist got its third win of the match as Fletcher defeated Haraguchi, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 6 singles. Rozenstein got the first point of the match for the Bobcats at No. 3 singles as he cruised past Bjerke, 6-3, 6-3. Marist clinched the win with a 4-1 lead as Dernic downed Roser in two sets at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Quinnipiac got two wins back to bring it within 4-3 as Kuwert was able to pull off the strong three-set win over Tanzer at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Ezaka followed that up by winning the final match of the day with one of his biggest wins of the season, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Kurz at No. 1 singles.
The Bobcats hit the road for their final two matches of the regular season where they will travel to Fairfield on Thursday, Apr. 21 at 3 PM to take on the Stags before wrapping up the regular season in Watervilet, New York against the Siena Saints at 11:30 AM.
