HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y. - pictured) scored a career-high seven goals to lead the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team to a 17-9 over Canisius on Saturday afternoon at QU Lacrosse Turf Complex.
With the win, the Bobcats move to 7-3 overall and remain alone in first in the MAAC at 4-0. With Monmouth's 9-8 loss to Detroit and Manhattan's 11-10 win over Marist on Saturday, Quinnipiac has a two-game lead with two games to play and needs only to win one of its final two contests to win the MAAC regular season title outright. Canisius falls to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC with the loss.
Feldman's seven goals passed his previous career high of five, which he had set on three occasions, including last week against Detroit, when he set a new career high with eight points on five goals and three assists. His first goal of the game, which made it 3-0 in the first quarter, was the 50th of his career, putting him well ahead of pace to score 100 in his career, something only three Bobcats have other done.
Feldman's goal which made it 3-0 came after goals from freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) and senior attack Ryan Keenan (Oshawa, Ontario) before Canisius ever earned possession on the offensive end of the field. The Golden Griffins recovered from the slow start and twice pulled within a single goal, at 3-2 in the first quarter and 5-4 early in the second.
However, the Bobcats then put the game away with a 6-0 run, scoring the final five goals of the first half to take a 10-4 lead into the break and then adding the first goal of the second half. Feldman began and ended the 6-0 run, but had some help from his friends along the way. Sophomore midfielder Anthony Carchietta had a leaping goal to make it 7-4 in the second quarter, and sophomore midfielder Ryan Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) followed with a pretty feed to the doorstep to junior attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.). Sophomore midfielder Ryan Lawson (Niskayuna, N.Y.) made the score 9-4 and Keenan capped off the half by finishing a hat trick to make the score 10-4.
Feldman started off the second half with a goal to cap off the 6-0 run, but Canisius was able to steal a little bit of momentum with back-to-back goals to close within 11-6. Feldman, though, scored the next two goals and then added his seventh early in the fourth quarter to answer another Golden Griffin goal to make the score 14-7 and essentially put the game away.
Freshman attack Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.) added a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter for the Bobcats, while freshman attack Mike Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) added his first collegiate point when he found sophomore attack James Byrns (Massapequa, N.Y.) for a late goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had 12 saves for the Bobcats to get the win in goal, while sophomore faceoff specialist Will Vitelli (Milford, Conn.) was 16-25 and led the Bobcats with six ground balls.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth for a 1 p.m. contest, when a win would secure the top seed and the right to host the MAAC Tournament.
