MAAC PLAY BEGINS
Quinnipiac opens its MAAC schedule against Siena this weekend, as the Bobcats are the last of the seven teams to get conference play started. Last weekend, the road team emerged victorious in all three MAAC games, as Siena opened with a 12-9 loss at home to Canisius, while Marist edged Monmouth 9-8 and Detroit cruised past Manhattan 9-3.
LAST GAME (FAIRFIELD 13, QUINNIPIAC 7)
Fairfield used a 5-0 run to close out the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead and went on to capture a 13-7 win over Quinnipiac on Tuesday night at Fairfield's Rafferty Stadium. The Bobcats fell behind 2-0 early, but bounced back to tie behind goals from sophomore midfielder Anthony Carchietta in the first quarter and junior attack Drew D'Antonio in the second quarter. However, T.J. Neubauer, who had a game-high five goals, scored three times in the 5-0 run to close the half, including twice in the final minute, to help the Stags to a 7-2 lead. Carchietta and freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo each had two goals and an assist to lead the Quinnipiac attack, while junior goalie Jack Brust had 11 saves.
KEENAN ON CAREER CHARTS
Senior attack Ryan Keenan is on his way to finishing among the all-time leaders in Quinnipiac history in goals and points. His 68 career goals, including seven so far this season, already rank him tied for 11th in Bobcat annals, four shy of moving into the top 10. Keenan also has 93 career points (13 so far this season), moving him into 14th, and is seven away from becoming the 12th player in school history to record 100 career points. After tallying a fourth-quarter goal and assist at Fairfield on Tuesday night, Keenan has extended his streak to 20 straight games with at least one point, dating back to 2015 opening day against Brown.
A HAT TRICK OF HAT TRICKS FOR FELDMAN
Sophomore attack Brian Feldman enters MAAC play with 40 career goals in his first season and a half, ahead of pace to score over 100 goals in his career, something only three Bobcats have accomplished. He leads Quinnipiac with 11 goals this season, including three straight hat tricks in wins over Bellarmine, NJIT and Hartford.
FROST, BRUST EARN MAAC HONORS
Freshman attack Matt Frost was named the MAAC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week on Feb. 29 after scoring his first three collegiate goals in Quinnipiac's 12-6 road win over Bellarmine. A week later, junior goalie Jack Brust was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 12 saves, eight of which came in the second half, in a 9-7 win over NJIT.
FAMILY TIES
Quinnipiac's top two goal-scorers in the last two seasons are sophomore attack Brian Feldman (40) and senior attack Ryan Keenan (34). Coincidentally, they aren't the first members of their families to play college lacrosse together. Keenan's father, Derek, and Feldman's father, Daniel, played for one season together on the Ithaca lacrosse team in 1987, when Derek Keenan was a senior and Daniel Feldman was a freshman. It was a connection both players were unaware of until they were teammates at Quinnipiac.
INSTANT IMPACT
After being held scoreless in his first collegiate game, freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo (pictured) has developed into one of the team's top weapons, with at least one point in each of his last five contests. He had a goal and three assists in a win over Bellarmine and is coming off a two-goal, one-assist effort against Fairfield on Tuesday, giving him 11 points on the year.
NEW ROLES PAY OFF FOR CARCHIETTA, D'ANTONIO AGAINST FAIRFIELD
Sophomore Anthony Carchietta was in the opening day starting lineup at attack, but moved back to the starting midfield in the last game at Fairfield. He responded to the new role in fine fashion, tallying his first career multi-goal game with two goals and one assist in the 13-7 loss to the Stags. Junior Drew D'Antonio also made his first start with the Bobcats at attack (after transferring from Bryant in the offseason) and had a goal and an assist.
BOBCAT STAT LEADERS
There is a tight four-way race for the points lead for the Bobcats so far this season, with senior attack Ryan Keenan currently leading the squad with 13 points (seven goals, six assists). He is followed closely by sophomore attack Brian Feldman, who has a team-best 11 goals, and freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo (7-4-11). Senior midfielder Connor Meth (7-3-10) is in double figures as well. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Vitelli leads in faceoffs won (47) and ground balls with 20, while senior midfielder Nate Nibbelink and junior goalkeeper Jack Brust is second in ground balls (17) and has a 10.77 goals against average and a .495 save percentage, and senior defenseman Ryan Lawler leads the team in caused turnovers with 10.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Siena enters the weekend with a 1-5 overall record and an 0-1 mark in the MAAC after opening league play with a 12-9 home loss to Canisius. Siena earned an 11-7 win over UMass Lowell, but has suffered losses to nationally-ranked Syracuse, Hobart, Mercer and Saint John's, in addition to its MAAC defeat to Canisius. Chris Robertson leads the Saints in points with 14 (seven goals, seven assists), while Brian Prunty is the top goal-scorer with nine. Tim Cousin (6-4-10), Keenan Cook (5-4-9), Mike Reilly (3-6-9) and Jordan Barlow (6-2-8) have also contributed to a balanced attack. Tommy Cordts has seen most of the action in goal (11.68 GAA, .450 save percentage) and Tyler Pantalone is 43-89 on faceoffs.
SIENA SERIES
Quinnipiac and Siena are meeting for the eighth time, with Siena holding a 4-3 edge after breaking a tie last season with a 9-6 home win in Loudonville. The Bobcats have a 3-2 lead in the series at the Division I level.
LAWSON PROVIDES A LIFT IN WIN AT HARTFORD
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Lawson saw his first action of the 2016 season on March 12 against Hartford and came up big, providing two second half goals to help the Bobcats rally from a 7-3 halftime deficit to win in overtime. Lawson's second goal tied the score at 9-9 late in the fourth quarter after the Hawks had broken an 8-8 tie. Lawson had two goals as a freshman last season, one of which came against a Stony Brook team that finished the year ranked in the top 20.
BOBCATS PICKED SECOND IN MAAC COACHES POLL
The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, announced on December 9, 2015. Marist College, last year's MAAC Champions, claimed the top spot in the poll, while Monmouth was picked third. Marist and Quinnipiac met in the conference championship game a year ago, which the Red Foxes won on their home field 16-14.
INSIDE LACROSSE RECOGNITION
Three seniors on the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team – attack Ryan Keenan, midfielder Connor Meth and defenseman Chris Kendall - were named to the Preseason All-MAAC team by Inside Lacrosse Magazine in December. Keenan and Meth were also named to the Preseason All-MAAC team, which was voted on by the conference coaches.
BOBCATS NAME 2016 CAPTAINS
Five members of the Bobcats will share captain duties this spring, including four seniors and a redshirt junior. Attack Ryan Keenan, midfielder Connor Meth, defenseman Chris Kendall, face-off specialist Connor Devane, and goalkeeper Jack Brust will give Quinnipiac veteran leadership at every position on the field.
YOUNG SQUAD IN 2016
The leadership of the Bobcats captains (see above) will be key as Quinnipiac has a lot of young faces on the team this season. A total of 31 of the 43 players on the roster are freshmen (15) and sophomores.(16), while two junior transfers in their first seasons at Quinnipiac, adding to the influx of new talent. The youth has Quinnipiac poised to be a consistent contender in the MAAC for the next few seasons.
TOUGH TOP TO BOTTOM
Quinnipiac finished second in the MAAC last season, but just about every conference game it played came down to the wire. The Bobcats played at least one game against each of the other six conference teams that was decided by three goals or less, picking up one-goal wins over Detroit (13-12) and Monmouth (9-8) and two-goal wins over Manhattan (8-6) and Canisius (9-7). The Bobcats also fell 9-6 to Siena and dropped a 16-14 decision to Marist in the MAAC title game.
HOME, SWEET HOME
Quinnipiac's performance on its home turf will be important for the team's prospects in the MAAC this year. The Bobcats play road games against the other three teams that qualified for the MAAC Tournament last year (Marist, Monmouth, Detroit). A year ago, Quinnipiac earned two big one-goal wins on its home field, edging Detroit and Monmouth to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats will be on the road for the next two weeks for MAAC contests, traveling to Marist on Saturday in a rematch of the 2015 MAAC Championship game, which was also held in Poughkeepsie. Quinnipiac will then take a long road trip to Detroit on Sunday, April 10 before its next home game on Saturday, April 16 against Canisius.
