CHICAGO, Ill. – The Quinnipiac softball team dropped their 2016 season opener against Lipscomb University, 7-2 at the Total Control Sports Invitational. The Bobcats' second scheduled game was pushed back and then cancelled due to high winds in Chicago.
With the result, the Lipscomb Bison improved to 2-4 on the year while Quinnipiac fell to 0-1. In the opener, senior Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) led the Bobcat offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI while sophomore Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) went 1-for-2 and added a walk.
The Bobcats took an early lead in the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) led the game off with a walk, stole second and then came around to cross the plate for the game's first run after an RBI single by Edmands. With one out, Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) recorded the second walk of the frame and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Robey then gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead after two consecutive Bobcat walks forced the runner home. Freshman Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) registered an RBI off the walk, in her first career plate appearance as a Bobcat.
Lipscomb scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning after three scoreless frames from Robey. With two outs, a Bison runner advanced to second after a walk and wild pitch. An RBI single then cut the Bobcat lead to one run heading into the top of the fifth.
Quinnipiac left two runners on base in the top of the frame and the Bison took a 4-2 lead off three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Robey struck out two of the first three batters, but the Quinnipiac defense could not record a third out. Two errors and a wild pitch scored the first run of the inning followed by a two-run home run to give Lipscomb the lead.
In the top of the sixth, freshman Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) recorded a ground rule double in her first career at bat. Lipscomb then tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the final, 7-2.
Robey finished the day in the circle pitching five innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out five batters.
Quinnipiac continues the Total Control Sports Invitational with two games on Saturday, Feb. 20. The Bobcats kick off the day with a meeting against Western Illinois University at 10 a.m. followed by a contest against Loyola University of Chicago at 12:30 p.m.
