QU Men's Basketball Falls To Drexel Despite Mikey Dixon's 20-Point Effort

HAMDEN, Conn. - Drexel freshman guards Kari Jonsson (17 points, eight assists) and Kurk Lee (13 points, nine assists) combined for 30 points and 17 assists to offset a 20--point night from Quinnipiac freshman Mikey Dixon as the Dragons captured a 91-74 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The loss drops Quinnipiac's record to 4-7 on the year, with one non-conference game left at Brown on Dec. 29 before resuming MAAC play in January. Drexel, which received a game-high 25 points on 10-15 shooting from forward Rodney Williams, levels its record at 6-6 on the year with the win.
Drexel scored 51 points in the first half, taking a 51-41 lead into the break on the third three-pointer from Jonsson just before the buzzer. The Dragons had the upper hand early, racing out to an 11-point lead on three occasions, the last coming at 27-16 on a Jonsson jumper in the paint.
Quinnipiac responded with a 13-1 run to take its first lead of the game at 29-28 with 6:34 left in the first half. Sophomore forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) twice converted lay-ups off big-to-big passes from junior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.), who had a career-high five assists. around a Dixon fast break layup, and then a three-pointer from senior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) closed the gap to 27-25. Dixon converted two foul shots to tie the score, and after the Dragons split two at the line, Daniels scored off a post move to put the Bobcats in front 29-28.
The lead was short lived as Drexel came right back with a 9-0 run, capped off by five straight points from Lee on a breakaway lay-up off his steal and a three-pointer off a Jonsson feed. Dixon scored five points in 15 seconds on a three-pointer and a fast break layup to close the Bobcats within 39-36, but Drexel ended the half on a 12-5 run, capped off by Jonsson's three-pointer.
Jonsson hit two more three-pointers early in the second half, making him 5-5 from behind the arc on the day (before finishing 5-8), keeping Drexel in front 60-47 with 16:55 to play. Quinnipiac stayed within 12 on a layup from Dixon with 12:35 to go, but Drexel then went on a backbreaking 9-0 run to take its largest lead at 72-51 with 10:05 left on a Williams dunk off Jonsson's pass.
Dixon had his 20 points for the Bobcats on 6-10 shooting from the floor and 6-6 shooting from the line, extending his streak to seven straight games with 14 or more points. Daniels also had a solid all-around game for Quinnipiac, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Harris had 13 points on 5-9 shooting (3-5 from three) and junior guard Reggie Oliver (Apopka, Fla.) had 10. Austin Williams had a double-double for Drexel with 10 points and 12 rebounds (seven offensive), as he helped the Dragons to a 42-35 edge on the glass, snapping a streak of six straight games in which Quinnipiac has led in rebounding.
The Bobcats will face Brown next Thursday in Providence to close out their non-conference schedule and then resume MAAC play after the new year with a two-game road trip to Buffalo, facing Niagara on Jan. 2 and Canisius on Jan. 4. The next home game for the Bobcats will be Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. against Manhattan, which will be televised on SNY.
