HAMDEN, Conn. - The preseason MAAC favorite Monmouth men's basketball team used an 11-0 run spanning both halves to take a 20-point lead and went on to earn a 91-72 win over Quinnipiac on Thursday evening in the MAAC opener for both teams.
With the loss, the Bobcats slip to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the MAAC. Monmouth, which won the regular season title last year and returned almost all of its team this winter, improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC with the win.
For the fifth straight game, Quinnipiac was led in scoring by its freshman guards off the bench, as Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) led the way with 18 points while Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.), the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, had 15. Junior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) had his third career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, including his second in the last three games. Collin Stewart led Monmouth with 20 points off the bench, shooting 6-6 overall and 5-5 on threes.
Quinnipiac was within nine points in the final minute of the first half, but Stewart was able to get the line when he was fouled chasing down an offensive rebound and hit both foul shots. Josh James started off the second half with a layup, and after the Hawks split two foul shots, Micah Seaborn and Je'lon Hornbeak each hit three-pointers to stretch the lead up to 54-34 with 18:03 left in the game.
Daniels stopped the run temporarily with a layup, but Stewart answered with his fifth three-pointer of the game. Monmouth was able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way, although the Bobcats got as close as 14 points on a Dixon three-pointer with 4:58 left. Seaborn, though, scored five straight points on a fast break layup and a three-pointer to push the lead back up to 20 with 2:31 to go, and squelch and Quinnipiac comeback hopes.
The game started as a defensive struggle, as a Daniels layup with 12:10 left in the first half made the score 12-11 in favor of Monmouth. The Hawks then got it going, though, as Stewart hit two three-pointers in a 13-3 run that gave them their first double digit lead at 25-14. Dixon hit a three to get the lead down to 25-19, but the Hawks used a 12-4 run to open up a 37-23 advantage, its largest at the time, with 4:42 left in the half.
Quinnipiac held a 44-35 edge in the rebounding department, behind the 10 from Daniels and eight from senior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.). Hornbeak finished with 18 points and Seaborn added 17 for the Hawks.
The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday when they host Marist for a 2 p.m. contest at the TD Bank Sports Center.
