QU Women's Tennis Earns First MAAC Win, Sweeps Rider, 7-0

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team put up a strong performance Saturday afternoon on their way to a 7-0 sweep of the Rider Broncs to win their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season. In the victory, the Bobcats (2-1, 1-0 MAAC) yielded zero matches or sets to the Broncs (2-5, 1-2 MAAC).
The day began with doubles when Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) teamed up to take on Danielle Scrudato and Olivia Banks. Young and Oliphant made quick work of the Rider duo, beating them 6-0. The freshman duo of Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) then teamed up to defeat Caitlin Gardner and Amanda Binder, 6-0. The Bobcats completed the doubles sweep when Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) matched-up with Vanessa Canda and Cyd Melendez. Rencheli Rodriguez made quick work of the Rider pair, defeating them 6-1, giving the Bobcats the doubles point on the day.
The competition moved into singles play, where the Bobcats continued their dominance, winning six straight matches. Rodriguez got singles play started in the No. 3 singles match, where she defeated Gardner 6-0 and 6-1 in straight sets. Rencheli then followed suit, defeating Canda 6-0 and 6-1 in straight sets. The Bobcats kept the winning-streak alive when Lu took on Melendez in the No. 2 singles match. Lu and Melendez battled hard, but Lu won in the end, 6-4 and 6-2 in straight sets.
As singles play continued, the Quinnipiac never let up. Young swept Binder, 6-0 and 6-1 in straight sets, then Lohaphaisan defeated Scrudato 6-0 and 6-1 in straight sets. The Bobcats finished strong when Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) downed Binder, 6-0 in straight sets, giving the Bobcats the 7-0 win.
Up next for Quinnipiac is a trip to Jersey City, where the Bobcats will take on Saint Peter's on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 3 P.M.
