BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team completed the New England Championships in 27th place out of 34 teams on Saturday morning at Franklin Park.
Running a limited squad with the top seven Bobcat runners all taking an off week, several inexperienced competitors were placed into the spotlight in a crowded and talented field.
Junior Sal Siciliano (Avon, Connecticut) took full advantage as the top runner for Quinnipiac on the afternoon. His first time placing higher than fourth on the team, Siciliano found himself with the top finish on the day as he placed 106th overall out of a field of 221 runners. Missing the majority of the 2015 season, Siciliano put together the best finish of his career while crossing the line in 26:37.
Senior Kyle Liang (Norwich, Connecticut) tied for his highest finish on the team and he was the second-fastest Bobcat on Saturday placing 116th with a time of 26:42.4. Only ten spots behind Siciliano in the overall standings, Liang matched his performance at the 2014 New England Championships where he also finished second on the team.
Rounding out the field for the Bobcats on the day was a group of underclassmen led by sophomore Ben Lanza (Middletown, Connecticut) who placed 162nd with a time of 27:19.2. Freshmen Matthew Allen (Ambler, Pennsylvania) and Joseph Lazzaro (Toms River, New Jersey) followed placing 167th (27:30.1) and 171st (27:31.9), respectively.
Next up for the Bobcats is a huge spotlight meet as Quinnipiac heads to the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana for the first time in program history on Saturday, October 15. The national meet draws powerhouse programs from around the nation as they attempt to prepare their athletes at the site of the 2016 NCAA Championships (Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course).
