
Madison Gegeckas Tallies 56 Points As QU Women's Rugby Rolls Past Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – Senior Madison Gegeckas (Downington, Pa.) accounted for 56 points with two tries and 23 conversions (including a perfect 15-for-15 in the first half), as the Quinnipiac women's rugby team cruised to a 215-0 win over Castleton on Sunday afternoon in its second-to-last game of the regular season.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 6-1, bouncing back from their first loss of the season last weekend at Central Washington, which snapped an 11-match win streak dating back to last year. Castleton, in its first season as a varsity program, slips to 0-8 with the loss.
It was also the second shutout of the season for the Bobcats, which won a 44-0 road decision over AIC back on Sept 9. Quinnipiac has allowed only 53 points in seven matches (7.6 per match), while holding five of the seven teams it has played to single digits.The Bobcats have also allowed only 12 second-half points the entire season (less than two per contest).
Fifteen different players had tries for the Bobcats on the day, including the first career tries for freshmen Carlyn Plowman (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Emma Shipton (Littleton, Colo), Niamh Savage (Plano, Texas) and Meg Rose (Silverthorne, Colo.) in the second half, as well as the first of the season for junior Lillian Weldon (Breckenridge, Colo.). Plowman's try was the first of the second half, and Gegeckas hit the crossbar with the ensuing conversion, ending her streak of 15 in a row, but she bounced back to make her next four and finished 23-for-28, adding two late tries to finish with 56 points.
Junior center Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vt.) had five tries and six assists to lead an offense that had a multitude of contributors. The three-try club included five members, as senior flanker Hailey Wyatt (Breckenridge, Colo.) had four tries and three assists, junior scrum half Mason Johnson (Olympia, Wash.) had three tries and two assists, junior wing Rebecca Haight (Oconomowoc, Wis.) had three tries and an assist, and junior prop Karee Helgerson (Portland, Ore.) had three tries.
Junior center Flora Poole (Christchurch, New Zealand) had two tries and five assists, and Savage had five assists to go with her first collegiate try. Senior fullback Maggie Mules (Emmitsburg, Md.) had a try and four assists, while freshman wing Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, Calif.) and sophomore wing Caitria Sands (Essex, Vt.) each had two tries and an assist.
Quinnipiac will be back in action next weekend when it hosts the final match of the season against American International College, which will be played at Southington High School on Saturday at 1 p.m.
