LOOKING TO START NEW STREAK
The Quinnipiac women's rugby team is in a rare position this weekend -- looking to bounce back from a loss. The Bobcats traveled cross-country last weekend and dropped a 19-12 decision to Central Washington, snapping an 11-match win streak dating back to last season.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Castelton is a first-year varsity program that enters this weekend at 0-7 on the year. Their first match as a varsity program to open the season was against Vermont state-rival Norwich, which is the only opponent the two teams have in common.
LAST TIME OUT
Quinnipiac trailed 19-5 at the half and shut out Central Washington in the second half, but the Wildcats defense was able to preserve the lead and take a 19-12 win in Ellensburg, Washington. Junior scrum half Mason Johnson had a hand in both Quinnipiac tries, assisting on one in the first half from junior Flora Poole, and then scoring five minutes into the second half to close the lead to 19-12. For the final 35 minutes, though, neither team could score as the Wildcats maintained the seven-point differential for the win.
THIS STREAK GOES TO ELEVEN
Quinnipiac's loss last weekend at Central Washington an 11-match win streak, dating back to a regular season loss to Central Washington at home a year ago. The Bobcats rebounded to win their final six matches of last season, including three in the national tournament, culminating in a national championship win over Army, and began this season with five straight wins to stretch the win streak to 11.
THORN IN THEIR SIDE
Central Washington remains the only varsity rugby program that Quinnipiac has played and not defeated. Central Washington is 3-0 all-time in the series, winning two close ones in Washington (22-19 in 2014, 19-12 last weekend), as well as a 33-12 win last year in Hamden.
DEE-FENSE
Quinnipiac has had a remarkable season defensively, holding opponents to just 8.8 points per game and not allowing 20 in a single contest. After trailing Army 19-17 at the half in the season opener, the Bobcats outscored the Black Knights 15-0 in the second half to come away with the win. Quinnipiac then earned a 44-0 shutout win over AIC, the first shutout for the program since a win over UConn in 2012. A penalty conversion from Norwich late in the first half ended the shutout streak on Sept. 17, but the Cadets were unable to break into the try zone as the Bobcats rolled to a 64-3 win. Notre Dame finally crossed over the line in the second half on Sept. 24 in a 30-5 Bobcat win, ending a tryless streak of 255 minutes for Quinnipiac, while Brown managed a single try in a 77-7 Quinnipiac win.
SECOND HALF LOCKDOWN
Quinnipiac's defense in the second half has been ridiculously good this season. In six matches, the Bobcats have yielded only 12 points after intermission, a try from Notre Dame College in a 30-5 win, and a try to Brown in a 77-7 win. In both close matches Quinnipiac has had (a 32-19 win over Army, and a 19-12 loss to Central Washington), Quinnipiac has allowed all 19 points in the first and half, and shut its opponents out in the second.
COMING UP NEXT
Quinnipiac will close out the regular season when it hosts AIC for a Senior Day contest on Saturday.
