RESULTS
TERRE HAUSE, Indiana – Competing in the prestigious Pre-National Invitational for the first time in program history, the Quinnipiac men's cross country team placed 17th out of 20 teams in the Men's White 8k from the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday afternoon.
Racing against the likes of Miami (Ohio), Cincinnati, Clemson, Marquette, Wake Forest, Oakland, Tulane and Arizona, Quinnipiac showed well racing in the most talented field they will face all season. Ohio claimed the team victory in the event with 132 team points while Miami (Ohio) (159), Cincinnati (178), Montana State (212) and UMKC (222) rounded out the top five. The Bobcats accumulated 368 total points to finish ahead of Drake, Central Michigan and Murray State.
The star of the day was senior Dylan Fearon (Tenafly, New Jersey) as he ran alongside fifth-year standout Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vermont) and outkicked his teammate down the stretch to place 15th overall and first on the team. Placing first on the team for the first time all season (previous season high second on the team twice in 2016), Fearon put together a time of 25:16.4 in the 8k event.
In a race between teammates that came down to the last few seconds of the competition, Copley was right behind Fearon as he managed to place 18th in the field of 134 runners. Copley sees his string of first place finishes on the team end at five consecutive appearances but he and Fearon's combined stellar performance led the way for the Bobcats. Copley posted a time of 25:20.1, less than four seconds behind Fearon in the leaderboard.
The depth of the field certainly came into play as freshman Tommy Consalvo (Brookfield, Connecticut) was the next-closest Bobcat placing in 111th overall. He led the second group that featured fellow classmate Michael Kiernan (Warwick, Rhode Island) and Connor McAlary (Shoreham, New York) who rounded out the scoring on the day for the Bobcats. Consalvo clocked in at 27:04.5 while Kiernan was right behind in 112th (27:05) and McAlary closely followed in 117th (27:22.2).
Quinnipiac faces a quick turnaround for their next meet as the Bobcats will compete in the CCSU Mini Meet on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 PM held at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain.
