HEMPSTEAD, New York – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Hofstra, 6-3, in a non-conference match-up at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in Hempstead, New York. The Bobcats drop to 2-7 overall while Hofstra improves to 7-3.
Meghan McCullough (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) had a goal and an assist for Quinnipiac while Lauren Belskie (Hillsborogh, Pennsylanvia) and Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) also scored for the Bobcats. Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) picked up an assist on Belskie's goal to push her team-leading scoring streak to six games.
Just over seven minutes into the game, Hofstra leading scorer Claudia Marin Samper dribbled into the scoring circle, stepped between two Quinnipiac defenders and unleashed a blast on the goal. The shot caromed into the cage off the opposite post to give Hofstra an early one-goal lead. Simca Schoen scored her fourth goal of the season to push Hofstra's lead to 2-0 with just under 20 minutes to play to give the Pride a 2-0 lead.
Minutes later, Quinnipiac pressed, getting the ball deep before an obstruction awarded the Bobcats a corner. Federico inserted the ball, finding McCullough who stick-stopped the ball for Belskie. Belskie unleashed a blast on goal that tipped off a Hofstra defender and past Pride goalkeeper Carys Sims. The assist gives Federico a team-leading six-game scoring streak while Belskie scored her second career goal.
Five minutes, Colby Hussong picked up a loose ball out of a pile-up in front of the Quinnipiac goal, moved to open space, and flipped a shot on goal that trickled past Conaboy to push Hofstra's lead back to two goals, 3-1, with 11 minutes to goal. With eight minutes to play, Marin Samper made another bid, breaking away one-on-one with Conaboy, who denied her on her first attempt. The ball rolled towards the goal after the initial stop but a diving stop by Megan Osanitsch (Harwinton, Connecticut) kept Hofstra off the board.
Two minutes later, Schoen scored her second of the game off a corner. Schoen took a pass from Marin Samper, after an insert from Leigh Maxwell-Smith, and sent it on goal. Schoen's blast tipped off a player in front of Conaboy and re-directed into the back of the cage as Hofstra jumped out to a 4-1 lead.
Stella Schoen got on the board for Hofstra, converting on a blast from the top of the circle off a corner. Moments later, Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania) took control of the ball at midfield and fired a stretch pass up-field to Felicia Costanzo (Lakeland, New York). Costanzo made a move around a Hofstra defender to find Reilly all alone with only Swan to beat. Reilly wheeled back and unleashed a shot on the Pride's goalkeeper, beating her five-hole to give Quinnipiac its second goal of the game. It was Reilly's third goal of the year, and also made her just the second player this year to score in back-to-back games after Federico did it against Michigan State on Sept. 11 and Lafayette on Sept. 13. Costanzo's assist was her first of the year.
After Marin Samper scored her second of the game to give Hofstra a 6-2 lead, Quinnipiac's McCullough scored on the second of back-to-back corners when Osantish fired a shot on goal from the top of the circle that found McCullouogh's stick for the re-direct past Swan.
Quinnipiac returns home on Sunday, Sept. 27 to host Vermont in a non-conference match-up set for a 12 p.m. start at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Connecticut.
