HAMDEN, Connecticut - Two goals in less than five-and-a-half minutes from Haley Swartz (Downington, Pennsylvania) and Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) helped lift Quinnipiac field hockey to a 2-1 win against Holy Cross in a non-conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-6 overall and 2-1 at home while Holy Cross falls to 5-4 on the season.
Swartz scored her first goal of the year and fifth of her career to tie the game with less than 20 minutes to play before Reilly's second goal of the season gave Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead. Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) extended her team-leading point streak to five games with an assist on Swartz's goal while Reilly's was set-up by Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania).
Quinnipiac and Holy Cross played to a scoreless tie through the first half, with Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) registering one save for the first 35 minutes while Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) recorded her NCAA Division I-leading 10th defensive save of the season. King's defensive stop gives her 15 for her career- the second most of all active Division I student-athletes. Conaboy finished with seven saves in the win.
Coming out of the half, Holy Cross threatened early, firing on the Quinnipiac goal off a flurry in the opening minutes. Conaboy steered a shot from point-blank range by Emily Loprete before Maureen Connolly made a bid on an open cage. Shemo made an incredible play to step in front of the shot to Conaboy's right, knocking the shot down for the defensive save. Conaboy made another save on a shot by Connolly before action went the other way.
King had an opportunity just two minutes later when she received the ball from the top of the circle, just to the right of the Crusader goal. King blasted a shot through traffic, and past Inch, that glanced off the post and trickled out of bounds.
The Crusaders' Casey Considine deposited her first goal of the season with an assist credited to Lauren Ineson. Ineson held the ball on the right side of the circle and centered a pass to her left after Conaboy came out of the cage to challenge. Conaboy dove back to make a stab at Considine's shot but missed, allowing the ball banged off the back of the cage to give the Crusades a one-goal lead.
Quinnipiac answered less than three minutes later when Federico handled the ball to Holy Cross keeper Megan Inch's left and slapped a pass across the circle. The ball was knocked down in traffic but collected and tipped past Inch by Swartz to tie the game at 1-1.
Moments later it was Reilly with her second marker of the year to give Quinnipiac the lead. Similar to Quinnipiac's first goal, Reilly hammered away at a loose ball on a feed from Shemo before pushing it past Inch to give the Bobcats a lead.
In the closing minutes, momentum shifted back-and-forth as both teams saw several opportunities late. With no time remaining, Holy Cross was awarded a corner which saw Connolly blast a shot to the right of Conaboy. Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, Pennsylvania) slid out in front of it and knocked it down with her stick before taking control of the ball and dribbling out of the circle to cancel the Crusaders' scoring bid and end the game.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Friday, Sept. 25 when it travels to Hempstead, New York to face Hofstra at 3 p.m. The Bobcats will return home on Sunday, Sept. 27 to host Vermont in a non-conference match-up set for a 12 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn.
