
QU Women's Volleyball Falls to Holy Cross at the UMass Lowell Invitational

LOWELL, Mass – The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team were defeated in a non-conference rematch against the Holy Cross Crusaders on Friday afternoon (15-25, 17-25, 21-25). In the first game of the UMass Lowell Invitational, the Bobcats (1-7) fell to the Crusaders (1-6) in straight sets after taking down Holy Cross two weeks ago in a tough five set match for their first win of 2015.
This time it was the Crusaders winning their first match of the season. Holy Cross posted 40 kills and a .253 hitting percentage on route to the victory while the Bobcats recorded 28 kills and a .093 percentage.
Junior Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Indiana) led the offensive attack with 12 kills while senior libero, Cody Michaels (Versailles, Kentucky), was strong on the defensive end with a team-high 11 digs. Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) continued her strong start to her freshman campaign with 15 assists, eight digs and four total blocks on the day.
The Crusaders sprinted out of the gate with a huge first set, defeating Quinnipiac, 25-15. Holy Cross registered just two errors to go along with 14 kills and an impressive .500 hitting percentage. The Bobcats finished the first frame hitting at .160 with eight kills and four errors. Urycki and sophomore Jamie Termotto (Smithtown, New York) each had three kills in the opening set.
After a Urycki kill cut the Crusader lead to one at, 10-9, Holy Cross responded with five straight points to take a six point advantage in the first set. The Bobcats were unable to get within four the remainder of the set as Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the match.
Quinnipiac dropped the second set, 17-25, due to a .294 hitting percentage by the opposition. The Bobcats tallied 11 kills, but their nine errors and .056 hitting percentage hurt their chances at tying the match. QU trailed by just one in the middle of the frame, but Holy Cross rallied to score eight of the next nine points for an eight point lead. Senior Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) and sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Indiana) each provided three kills in the second set.
The Crusaders closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the third set. Quinnipiac was down by six late in the set, but put together a couple strong scoring opportunities to cut the advantage to three at 17-20. Holy Cross scored three of the next four points, but the Bobcats answered with three consecutive points of their own, looking to get back into the match. Two Urycki kills and a Crusader attack error brought the score to 21-23. Holy Cross refused to let the Bobcats come back and take the set, closing out the match with two straight kills.
Quinnipiac will continue play in the UMass Lowell Invitational with two matches on Saturday, September 12. The Bobcats will face San Jose St. at 11:30 a.m. before taking on the host school in the final contest at 7 p.m.
