HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University women's golf head coach John O'Connor has announced the signing of Caitlan Blydenburgh (Castleton, New York), Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut), Luciana Tobia (LaPaz, Bolivia) and Abby Chase (Beaver Dam Wisconsin) to the Bobcats' roster for the 2015-16 season.
"All four student-athletes will be great additions to our team and will see significant competition throughout their careers," O'Connor said. "They are excellent students and will graduate near or at the top of their class."Kemmling joins O'Connor's Bobcats after an incredible scholastic career that saw the Connecticut native lead Berlin High School to three consecutive CIAC State Championships. Kemmling finished as the Central Connecticut Conference Championship runner-up as a freshman, before winning back-to-back individual championships as a sophomore and junior. Kemmling competes under the instruction of famed high school coach Jim Barnes and swing coaches Suzy and Bill Whaley.
"Julia [Kemmling] and Abby [Chase] have so much power that the distances that we play at this level will not be a factor," O'Connor noted. "Luciana has played in numerous regional tournaments and our schedule should not be a factor."
Blydenburgh comes to Quinnipiac from Columbia High School in Averill Park, New York where she was the Northeastern New York PGA Junior Golf Girls 16-18 Player of the Year. In 2013, Blydenburgh tied for fifth in the NYS Girls' Amateur Championship at Skaneateles Country Club, shooting 79-75. Blydenburgh is also a student of Suzy and Bill Whaley.
Tobia will complete her final season at the prestigious IMG Academy before coming to Quinnipiac next Fall. The 18-year old Bolivian native was recently ranked No. 1 in Bolivia and No. 180 in her class of 800 and 284th out of 2,588 female scholastic golfers after posting a 78.65 per-round average in six events last year. Tobia posted four top-10 finishes last year, highlighted by a third place finish at Marriott's Grand Pine Golf Tournament last May.Chase comes to Quinnipiac from Beaver Dam (Wisconsin) High School as a stellar scholastic golfer who was selected first team all conference, conference Player of the Year and honorable mention all state. Abby was coached by Tim Chase.
"The addition of these four golfers makes our team far deeper than it currently is," O'Connor said. "It will create much more competition during practice with the goal of being much closer to our goal of winning our conference championship."
