LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The conditions might not have been perfect but the gusty winds certainly didn't get in the way of what was a highly successful day for the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team at the Rider Invitational. Facing off against 23 different teams, including five from the MAAC, the Bobcats picked up 108 points to place 5th overall out of 24 teams at the competition in New Jersey. Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) jumped to a new program record in her signature event while Quinnipiac scored three victories (200m, 4x400m and 4x800m) to highlight the day's action.
"I'm really proud of our effort today in what was not the most ideal conditions with all the wind," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "Our times weren't all that impressive per se but I'm very proud of the results we got in light of the wind. Leah (Pfrommer) jumped nearly a foot farther than her previous best and our relay groups did a fantastic job today."
A local product out of Killingworth, Pfrommer stole the show as she leaped to a new program record in the long jump. The freshman sensation recorded a jump of 5.82m to take 2nd place out of 19 competitors. Already the program's long jump record holder coming into the day, Pfrommer bested her previous best of 5.55m (18' 2") by nearly one who foot at 5.82m (19' 1").
Late in the afternoon, the Bobcats completely dominated the relay events as Quinnipiac claimed two victories and a runner-up finish to nearly sweep all three.
The run started with a 1st place result out of six teams in the 4x400m as Becca Stabile (Haverhill, Massachusetts), Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York), Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) and Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) combined to finish at 3:53.07, good enough for the fourth-fastest 4x400m relay in program history.
Much of the same results followed as the team of Chelsea Savage (Pembroke, Massachusetts), Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut), Emma Johnson (Metuchen, New Jersey) and Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Connecticut) clocked in with at time of 9:33.20 to also place 1st out of seven teams.
Quinnipiac just missed out on the relay sweep as the 4x100m team of Alea Simons (Piscataway, New Jersey), Pfrommer, Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) and Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) ran the second-fastest 4x100m relay in program history at 49.39 seconds. The team of Bobcats finished a mere 0.61 seconds behind St. Joseph's (Pa.) for 1st place out of six teams.
Samuels prolonged the Bobcats' successful day in the sprint events as the junior breezed to a 1st place result in the 200m dash, finishing 0.57 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher with a time of 24.98 seconds. In a crowded field of 40 runners, Samuels dominated the field with the only time under 25 seconds and just the third runner to clock in with a time under 26 seconds in the 200m dash.
The top of the 800m leaderboard was littered with Bobcats as Caron, Darby Ginley (Warwick, New York) and Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) all placed with a result within the Top 7 finishers. Caron led the way with an impressive 2nd place result (out of 33) with a personal-best time of 2:19.45. Ginley was right behind with a 4th place finish and time of 2:20.09 as the freshman joined the sophomore Caron to lead an impressive run from the QU underclassmen. Campbell, the veteran of the group as a junior class member, placed 7th overall as she finished in 2:20.31.
Quinnipiac's underclassmen continued to show very well on the afternoon as freshman Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) led a bevy of Bobcats in the 1500m as she scored 2nd place in the event with a time of 4:47.43. Roberts led a group of 13 Bobcats, the most in any single event on the day for QU, with her best career finish in any track & field event.
The troubling wind gusts were felt by the Bobcats' contingent of field competitors as well but it didn't stop Jennifer Mears (Vernon, Connecticut) and Reid from both placing in the javelin throw on the afternoon. Mears threw 35.30m while Reid tallied 32.46m to place 5th and 7th, respectively. Pisciotta turned in 10.88m on her triple jump to claim 6th place while Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) took 8th in the discus throw with 31.17m.
Other strong individual showings in the track events came from junior Ashley Carle (Jackson, New Jersey) in the 5000m as she earned six points for QU in the team standings with her 3rd place finish with a time of 18:50.96. Lee tallied the second program record on the afternoon with a time of 14.86 seconds to finish 4th out of 16 competitors in the 100m hurdles. Baker and Simons also put together strong showings in the 100m dash as Baker tallied a personal-best 12.74 seconds while Simons clocked in at 12.94 seconds to claim 6th and 7th place, respectively.
Next up for Quinnipiac is a two-day meet back down in New Jersey as the Bobcats take part in the Larry Ellis Invitational from April 17-18 at Weaver Stadium in Princeton, N.J.
