HAMDEN, Connecticut – Throughout the entirety of Sunday's matchup, for all the great defensive plays the Bobcats made, the effort and hard work exerted did not lead to points on the other end. The Manhattan Jaspers played spoiler in the Quinnipiac women's basketball team's return to the TD Bank Sports Center as they defeated the Bobcats, 52-42, in a true defensive stalemate from Hamden.
Shots came from all across the court but few managed to find the bottom of the net for the Bobcats as the Jaspers held Quinnipiac to just 21.3 percent (16-75 FG) from the floor and 15.2 percent (5-33 3FG) from behind the arc.
Even with all the struggles coming on the offensive end, the Bobcat defense continued its stellar play as Manhattan was forced into 35 turnovers while Quinnipiac came up with 20 steals in the losing effort. The 35 forced turnovers for Quinnipiac are the most by a Bobcat opponent in a single-game in the Bobcats' Div. I program history (since 1998-99). The 20 steals also marks the most for Quinnipiac in a single-game since totaling 21 against Bryant on Feb. 25, 2013.
Edel Thornton (Cork, Ireland) led Quinnipiac with eight points to go along with five steals in 20 minutes. Maria Napolitano (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched seven points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals but struggled shooting going just 2-for-13 and 1-of-9 from three-point range. Aryn McClure (Springfield Gardens, New York) posted a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds with four points, one block and one steal in 22 minutes.
In a game where points were coming at a premium, Manhattan struggled from three (1-9 3FG) but managed to score 24 points in the paint and knock down 23 free throws while the Bobcats only hit on 5-for-11 at charity stripe for the game.
With just 23 combined points scored in the first quarter, the Jaspers started to break the game open with an 8-0 run to open the second quarter. Amani Tatum was the go-to player in the stretch as she score six straight points to give Manhattan their biggest lead of the first half, 19-12. Quinnipiac's defense then took its turn to shine as the Jaspers finished the second period on a scoreless streak that lasted 5:20 while Napolitano, McClure and Brittany Martin (Sicklerville, New Jersey) each hit a bucket to make it 22-21 at the half.
After a combined four points were scored in the first 4:11 of the third quarter, Quinnipiac looked as if they had finally found their footing with a 7-0 run over just 49 seconds to take their biggest lead of the game, 28-24.
But just as the Bobcats had finally found some offense, the Jaspers once again found an answer and buckled down on defense and closed the quarter on a 12-5 run that gave the visitors a 36-33 lead heading into the final 10-minute stanza.
Neither team scored a field goal in the fourth quarter until the 4:41 mark but Quinnipiac had a golden opportunity to potentially tie the score as Tatum was called for a technical foul on a Brittany Johnson (Pickerington, Ohio) breakaway look at the rim. Unfortunately, the hope was quickly dashed as two missed free throws and an empty offensive possession swung momentum back favorably into Manhattan's hands.
The Jaspers continued to find offense behind Tatum as she notched eight of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Manhattan lead stretched to as many as 11 points before the Bobcats eventually winding up with the 52-42 loss.
Even with the less-than-stellar night shooting, Quinnipiac snagged 30 offensive rebounds which is the most in a single-game for the Bobcats since grabbing 31 against Stony Brook on Nov. 29, 2007.
Quinnipiac looks to rebound in non-conference play as the Bobcats head to Northeastern for a 7 PM tip-off on Wednesday night.
