Quinnipiac | Albany
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will make its first television appearance of the 2015-16 season when it hosts Albany on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. contest, which will be shown live on SportsNet New York (SNY).
The Quinnipiac Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be sponsoring a toy drive for the Albany contest, as fans are encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys to benefit 400 registered families from the Hamden Community Services and Smilow Cancer Center of New Haven. Anyone who provides a toy at the Albany game on Dec. 1 will receive a voucher for two tickets to a future game.
The contest will feature two teams that have won all of their games at home in the early part of the 2015-16 season. Albany comes in with a 4-3 record (4-0 at home) after winning two straight games at home this weekend over NJIT on Friday and Yale on Sunday. Quinnipiac, meanwhile, is 2-2 overall (2-0 at home) after winning back-to-back home games when it was last in action, defeating Holy Cross on Nov. 22 and N.C. Central on Nov. 24.
A year ago, the Bobcats handed Albany one of only three home losses that it would suffer on the year, pulling out a close 76-73 decision in overtime. Current sophomore Dimitri Floras (Nashua, N.H.) had a career-high 14 points in that game, including the basket to put Quinnipiac ahead to stay in the extra session.
Sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn. - pictured) has led the Bobcats in scoring in each of the last two games, including career highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds in the Holy Cross win (on his 20th birthday) and 16 points and seven rebounds in the win over N.C. Central. He enters the week tied for third in the nation in blocked shots per game at 3.75, while Quinnipiac as a team ranks third with 7.0 per game. The Bobcats also rank third in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (18.5), continuing a tradition which has seen them lead the country in at least one rebounding statistic in each of the last five years.
The Quinnipiac and Albany coaching staffs have close ties, as current Bobcat assistant Eric Eaton is a former assistant for Albany Head Coach Will Brown. Eaton was on the Albany staff in 2006, when the Great Danes qualified for the NCAA Tournament and led top-seeded UConn by 12 in the second half of a 1-16 game before the Huskies came back to win by 13. Current Quinnipiac head coach Tom Moore was the associate head coach at UConn at the time.
After facing Albany, the Bobcats will travel to Buffalo this weekend to begin MAAC play, meeting Niagara on Friday and Canisius on Saturday in a pair of 7 p.m. tips.
