
No. 5/5 QU Women's Ice Hockey Advances to Nutmeg Classic Championship with 1-0 Win Over UConn

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal midway through the first period to give the nationally-ranked No. 5/5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team a 1-0 victory over the UConn Huskies in the first round of the Nutmeg Classic on Friday night.
The Bobcats advanced to the Nutmeg Classic championship game for the third straight season and the seventh time in the 12 year history, where they will face the Yale Bulldogs for the fourth time in the championship game. Quinnipiac became the seventh team in NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey to reach the 10-win mark in the 2015-16 season with a 10-1-3 record (5-1-2 ECAC Hockey) while UConn fell below .500 with a 6-7-2 (3-4-0 Hockey East) record.
Kosta's goal was her sixth of the season and her third on the power play, to give her nine points this season, and her first point since Nov. 14 at Princeton. With 35 career goals, Kosta is seventh in program history while her 107 points trail only Kelly Babstock.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) extended her point streak to three games with her eighth assist of the season and 10th point. During Connery's point streak, she has picked up five assists over the three games. Connery's assist moves her into fifth all-time in program history with 44 while her 75 points also rank fifth in program history.
Goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) continued to excel between the pipes for the Bobcats as she recorded 16 saves for her third consecutive shutout to extend her shutout streak to 203:47, the third longest streak in program history. Rossman now has five shutouts this season and seven in her career, with her five shutouts tied for third in the country with Clarkson goaltender Shea Tiley. Rossman's seven career shutouts moves her into third in program history, surpassing Catherine Lapare's six career shutouts and only trailing Laden and Victoria Vigilanti's 25 career shutouts.
Special teams efforts were in full force on Friday night as a combined 12 penalties were called. The Bobcats netted the lone power play goal of the game to go 1 for 6 while the Huskies were 0 for 3 on the power play.
Quinnipiac held a strong advantage in shots on goal Friday night against UConn, as the Bobcats outshot the Huskies 33-16 in the victory, the seventh time this season the Bobcats have recorded at least 30 shots and 12th time they have outshot their opponent.
Kosta gave the Bobcats the early 1-0 lead on the power play with 11:57 to play in the first period and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. Woods and Connery battled along the left boards with a pair of Huskies to control the puck on the power play. Connery managed to jar the puck loose and hit Kosta with a pass at the top of the left faceoff circle. Kosta skated the puck into the circle before wristing a shot low past Chuli for the goal.
