QU Women's Volleyball Falls to Canisius, 3-1 on Sunday Afternoon

Katie Urycki Leads Bobcats with 14 Kills
Hamden, Conn. – Despite strong first and third sets, the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to Canisius, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Burt Kahn Court. Junior Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Indiana) led the Bobcats with a team-high 14 kills to go along with six digs.
With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 3-23 on the season and 1-13 in the MAAC, while Canisius improves to 9-17 overall and 7-7 in the conference. Overall set scores were 24-26, 13-25, 25-22, 18-25 in favor of the Golden Griffins.
Sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Indiana) registered eight kills on 17 swings with no errors for a .471 hitting percentage in the match. Freshman setter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) led Quinnipiac with 24 assists while adding seven kills on 14 attacks and six digs. On the defensive side, Cody Michaels (Versailles, Kentucky) led QU with 10 digs.
The Golden Griffins jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the opening set, 26-24. Both teams fought back and forth, but Canisius eventually came away with the win. Each side was evenly matched in the frame as Quinnipiac recorded 15 kills, hitting at a .270 clip while the Golden Griffins tallied 16 kills and a .268 hitting percentage.
With the opposition leading 22-19, the Bobcats bounced back to tie the game at 23-23. Three of Quinnipiac's four points came off kills including one each from Miller, Jen Coffey (Merrimack, New Hampshire) and sophomore Sam Alechko (Old Tappan, New Jersey). With the game now tied, Canisius closed out the first set with three of the next four points.
Coffey led the team with five kills in the set while Urycki added four smashes on seven swings for a .429 hitting percentage. Miller contributed nine assists in the frame to go along with two kills, two digs and two blocks.
Canisius ran away with the second set, 25-13, recording a .455 hitting percentage. With the set tied 8-8 in the early going, the Golden Griffins scored nine consecutive points. The nine point advantage was too much for Quinnipiac to come back from as they fell into a two set hole.
Urycki led the Bobcats in the frame with two kills while Miller added four more assists to her totals.
Quinnipiac rebounded in the third set, recording 13 kills to take a 25-22 victory. An Alechko kill gave the Bobcats a 15-10 lead, but Canisius responded with six straight points. Play went back and forth until the Golden Griffins took a 22-19 lead late in the frame. Looking as if the match was over, QU gained their composure and rallied off the final six points of the game including kills from Miller and Urycki.
Urycki and Miller each smacked three kills in the fourth set. The freshman's slams came off just four swings for a .750 hitting percentage. Sophomore Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, California) came up big in the frame, recording a team-high five assists and six digs. Dawson finished the day with nine assists and seven digs.
Canisius finished off the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set. The Bobcats cut down an early eight point lead to 18-16 late in the frame, but the Golden Griffins answered with a 7-2 run to close out the match.
Kloos was perfect in the final set, smashing five kills on five swings. Urycki also added five kills while Miller contributed seven assists.
Quinnipiac returns to action for a non-conference midweek clash against the Hartford Hawks Wednesday, November 4. The Bobcats will host the Connecticut rival at 7 p.m. from Burt Kahn Court.
