Hamden, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team paid a special visit to West Rock Author's Academy in New Haven on Wednesday during their off day in their first week of official practice.
Members of the Bobcats attended the afternoon class sessions, where they read to the school's first and third graders. The visit was arranged by assistant coach Sean Doherty and West Rock Author's Academy principal Rosalyn Bannon and reading intervention teacher Pat Ponzio. WRAA is a Pre K-4 Magnet elementary school with a theme of reading and writing, which it promotes to its students from New Haven and surrounding communities.
"I am thrilled that our Quinnipiac Men's Basketball program was able to go to West Rock Author's Academy to read to New Haven children," said Head Coach Tom Moore. "It is always beneficial for both our guys and the students whenever we can do community outreach projects like this. Our guys get to further understand the impact they can have as role models to the young people of Greater New Haven while the students get a chance to see the results of hard work both on the court and in the classroom. I want to thank Coach Doherty and all of the people at West Rock for helping to set up this wonderful event."
The visit was the latest in a long list of community outreach projects that the team has undertaken in recent years. Last season, the team and staff volunteered at the Connecticut Special Olympics Holiday Sports Classic, helped with the REACH Foundation's Shop with a Cop program, helped raise funds for Autism Speaks, hosted a "Hoops for Heart Health" fundraiser and visited West Woods elementary school. Graduated senior Zaid Hearst '15 was selected to last year's Allstate Good Works team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
"Our West Rock staff would like to thank the Quinnipiac Bobcats for taking time out of their schedule to come talk to our students to stress the importance of academics," said Ponzio. "Our community is excited about our new partnership and looking forward to following the Bobcats."
The Quinnipiac Men's Basketball team is in its first week of official practice and will take part in Bobcat Madness tomorrow evening at the TD Bank Sports Center, beginning at 7 p.m. The Bobcats open their season on Nov. 13 against Sacred Heart at the Connecticut 6 Classic in New Britain, and host their home opener on Nov. 22 against Holy Cross.
